17. Formal Translation And David went out before them and answered, and David said to them, “If you have come to me for peace to help me, let my heart be united with you. But if you have come to betray me to my enemies when there is no violence in my hands, may the God of our fathers {Elohei avoteinu, National Protector} see and rebuke you.” |
17. Dynamic Translation David went out to meet them and said to them, “If you have come to me in peace to help me, then my heart will be joined together with yours. But if you have come to deceive me and hand me over to my enemies when I have done no violence in my hands, may the God of our ancestors {Elohei avoteinu, Family Defender} see it and rebuke you.” |
