1 And these are the ones who came to David at Ziklag while he was still detained {atzur: forcibly held} from before Saul son of Kish; and they were among the mighty men {gibborim: elite warriors} helping in the battle.
2 They were armed with the bow {qeshet: battle bow}, right-handed and left-handed, with stones and with arrows with the bow, from among the brothers {ahe: Saul's kin} of Saul, from Benjamin.
3 Ahiezer, the chief {rosh: leading commander}, and Joash were both sons of Shemaah the Gibeathite {hagivati: native of Gibeah}; Jeziel and Pelet were the sons of Azmaveth; and Berachah and Jehu the Anathothite.
4 And Ishmaiah the Gibeonite, a mighty man{gibbor: battle champion} among the Thirty{sheloshim: elite corps} and over the Thirty; and Jeremiah, and Jahaziel, and Johanan, and Jozabad the Gederathite.
5 Eluzai, and Jerimoth, and Bealiah, and Shemariahu, and Shephatyahu, the Hariphite {harifi: Hariph clan}, the Haruphite {harufi: Haruph clan}.
6 Elqanah {Elqanah: God Acquirer}, Isshiah, Azar’el, Yoezer, and Yishba‘am, the Korahites {korakhim: descendants of Korah}.
7 And Joelah and Zebadiah, the sons {benei: paternal lineage} of Jeroham, from Gedor {haGedor: regional town}.
8 And from the Gadites there separated themselves to David at the stronghold in the wilderness, mighty men of valor {chayil: proven strength}, men of war skilled with shield and spear, whose faces were like those of a lion {arieh: emblem of courage}, and who were swift upon the mountains.
9 Ezer was the chief {rosh: principal leader}, Obadiah was the second, and Eliab was the third {shlishi: tertiary officer}.
10 Mishmannah {mishmannah: roster name}, the fourth {harevi'i: rank order}; Jeremiah, the fifth.
11 Attai the sixth {hashishi: sequence marker}, Eliel the seventh {hashvii: rank designation}.
12 Johanan the eighth {sh’mini: ordinal indicator}, Elzabad the ninth {tshi’i: sequential rank}.
13 Jeremiah {yirmeyahu: the LORD will exalt} the tenth {asiri: ordinal position} and Makbannai the eleventh.
14 These were from the sons of Gad, leaders {rashei: principal officers} of the army {tsava: military force}; the least was one to a hundred, and the greatest to a thousand.
15 These are the ones who crossed {avru: secured passage} the Jordan in the first month when it was overflowing {mamli: flood stage} all its banks, and they put to flight all who lived in the valley to the east and to the west.
16 And men came from Benjamin and Judah to the stronghold {matzud: fortified refuge} to David {david: beloved leader}.
17 And David went out before them and answered, and David said to them, “If you have come to me for peace to help me, let my heart {lev: seat of intention} be united with you. But if you have come to betray me to my enemies when there is no violence in my hands, may the God of our fathers {Elohei avoteinu, National Protector} see and rebuke you.”
18 And a spirit clothed Amasai, chief of the Thirty, and he said, “To you, David, and with you, son of Jesse—peace! Peace to you, and peace to your helpers, for your help is from your God {Eloheikha, Source of Strength}.” Then David received them and appointed them among the leaders of the band {gedud: military troop}.
19 And from Manasseh some fell{nafal: changed allegiance} to David when he came with the Philistines against Saul for the battle; but they did not help them, because the Philistine rulers sent him away by counsel, saying, “He will fall to his master Saul, and it will be on our heads{rosh: lives at risk}.”
20 And as he went to Ziklag, there fell to him from Manasseh {Menasheh: a northern tribe} Adnah, Jozabad, Jediael, Michael, Jozabad, Elihu, and Zillethai, chiefs {rashei: military leaders} of the thousands.
21 And they helped David against the band {gedud: raiding party}, for they were all mighty men of valor {chayil: courageous strength}, and they became commanders in the army.
22 For from day to day they came to David to help him, until there was a great camp {mahaneh: gathered force}, like the camp of God {Elohim, Unmatched Strength}.
23 And these are the numbers of the leaders of those armed for battle who came to David at Hebron to turn the kingdom of Saul over to him according to the word {pi: authoritative command} of the LORD {YHWH, Sovereign Promise Fulfiller}.
24 The sons of Judah {Yehudah: southern tribe}, bearing shield and spear, were 6,800 equipped {chalutzei: battle ready} for the army.
25 And from the sons of Simeon {Shim'on: attentive one}, mighty fighters {gibborê: armed defenders} for the army—7,100.
26 From the sons of Levi {Levi: hereditary priestly tribe}, four thousand and six hundred {arbaat: four exact units}.
27 And Jehoiada was the leader {nagid: chief official} of Aaron, with three thousand seven hundred {shloshet alafim u-sheva me’ot: composite numeral} men.
28 And Zadok {tsadok: future High Priest}, a young man, a mighty man of valor, and from his father’s house twenty-two commanders {sarim: unit leaders}.
29 And from the sons of Benjamin, the brothers of Saul, three thousand; and until now, the majority {marbitam: dominant portion} of them are keeping the charge {mishmeret: official duty} of the house of Saul.
30 And from the sons of Ephraim, twenty thousand eight hundred mighty men of valor {chayil: martial strength} and men of renown {shemot: notable ones} for the house of their fathers.
31 And from half of the tribe {matteh: clan division} of Manasseh, eighteen thousand were designated {nikk’vu: officially marked} by name to come and make David king.
32 And from the sons of Issachar were men who knew understanding {vinah: discerning insight} for the seasons, to know what Israel should do; their chiefs {rasheihem: tribal leaders} were two hundred, and all their brothers were at their command.
33 From Zebulun, those who went out of the army and arranged for battle with every weapon of war, fifty thousand supporters {veodrei: able to maintain ranks} to help David, with a complete heart {belevav shalem: undivided devotion}.
34 And from Naphtali {naphtali: tribal contingent} were 1,000 officers, and with them, with shield {tsinnah: battle shield} and spear, 37,000.
35 And from the Danites {dani: tribal members}, those prepared {arkhei: equipped and ready} for battle, twenty-eight thousand six hundred.
36 And from Asher {Asher: northern tribe}, there went out an army of forty thousand {arbaim elef: military division} to arrange for battle.
37 And from across the Jordan, from the Reubenites, the Gadites, and the half-tribe of Manasseh, with every implement {klei: weapon} of war, one hundred and twenty thousand were arrayed for battle {arukhim: battle formation}.
38 All these men of war, keeping the battle order {ma’arakhah: battle formation}, came to Hebron with a whole heart to make David king over all Israel; and the remnant {she’erit: surviving group} of Israel united in one heart to make David king.
39 And they were there with David for three days, eating {okhlim: ongoing actions} and drinking, because their brothers had prepared {hekhinu: supplied in advance} for them.
40 And also those who were near to them, as far as Issachar, Zebulun, and Naphtali, brought food {lechem: provisions} on donkeys, camels, mules, and oxen—flour, pressed figs, raisins, wine, oil, cattle, and sheep in abundance, because there was joy {simchah: festival gladness} in Israel.
