1 And David, with the commanders of the army, set apart the sons of Asaph, Heman, and Jeduthun for service {la’avodah: sanctuary ministry}; they prophesied with harps, lyres, and cymbals, and their number as men of work {melakhah: temple duty} was assigned to their duties.
2 The sons of Asaph—Zakkur, Joseph, Nethaniah, and Asharelah—served under Asaph, who prophesied{hanibba: one who prophesied}, under the king’s authority{melech: royal leader}.
3 Concerning Jeduthun, the sons of Jeduthun—Gedaliah {gedalyahu: Yah is great}, Zeri, Jeshaiah, Hashabiah, and Mattithiah—six in all—were under the direction of their father Jeduthun, who prophesied with the lyre in giving thanks and praise to the LORD {YHWH, Worship Receiver}.
4 Of Heman {heman: temple musician}, the sons {bnei: hereditary line} of Heman were Bukkiah, Mattaniah, Uzziel, Shebuel, and Jerimoth; Hananiah, Hanani, Eliathah, Giddalti, and Romamti-ezer; Joshbekashah, Mallothi, Hothir, and Mahazioth.
5 All these were sons of Heman, the king’s seer, in the words of God {Elohim, Divine Speaker} to raise a horn {keren: symbol of honor}; and God gave Heman fourteen sons and three daughters.
6 All these were under the supervision of their father for music {shir: temple worship} in the house of the LORD {YHWH, Divine Director}, with cymbals, harps, and lyres for the service {avodat: temple ministry} of the house of God {Elohim, Holiness Dweller}; Asaph, Jeduthun, and Heman served under the king’s order.
7 And their number, together with their brothers, those instructed in song {melumdei-shir: trained in temple music} for the LORD {YHWH, Worship Recipient}, all who understand, was 288.
8 And they cast lots for the divisions of service {mishmeret: appointed rotations}, matching the small with the great, the one with understanding {mevin: discerning leader} with the student.
9 And the first lot {goral: sacred allotment} was drawn for Asaph, for Joseph {yosef: Asaph's son}; the second, for Gedaliah—he and his brothers and his sons—were twelve.
10 The third {ordinal: position in sequence} was Zakkur; his sons and his brothers numbered twelve {shenayim asar: exact total}.
11 The fourth {revi’i: ordinal rank} assigned to Izri, his sons {banaw: male descendants} and his brothers, twelve in all.
12 The fifth {hachamishi: ordinal position} was Nethaniah, his sons {banav: direct descendants} and his brothers—twelve in all.
13 The sixth {ha-shishi: position in rotation} was Bukkiah, his sons and his brothers—twelve {shenayim asar: priestly service count}.
14 The seventh {ha-shvi‘i: ordinal count} fell to Jesharelah, and his sons and his brothers were twelve {shneim asar: grouped number}.
15 The eighth was Jeshaiah {yesh`ayahu: eighth lot}, his sons and his brothers, twelve {sheneim `asar: complete group}.
16 The ninth {hatshi'i: ordinal marker} was Mattaniah, his sons and his brothers {echav: close kin}—twelve in all.
17 The tenth {ha‘asiri: position in sequence} was Shimei, his sons, and his brothers—12 {shneim asar: total number} in all.
18 The eleventh division {division: organized service group} for Azarel {azar-el: appointed music leader} included his sons and his brothers, totaling twelve.
19 The twelfth assignment fell to Hashabiah {hashabyah: assigned family leader}, with his sons and his brothers—twelve {shenayim asar: total serving members}.
20 For the thirteenth {shlosha asar: sequence number}, Shubael {Shubael: guild leader}, his sons and his brothers, were twelve.
21 For the fourteenth {le-arbaah asar: assigned order}, Mattithiah, his sons and his brothers {echav: kinsmen band}, twelve.
22 The fifteenth {chamisha asar: ordinal placement} division belonged to Jerimoth, his sons and his brothers—twelve {sheneym asar: group total}.
23 To the sixteenth {le-shisha asar: ordinal assignment} to Hananiah, his sons and his brothers, twelve {shenayim asar: compound numeral}.
24 The seventeenth assignment was to Joshbekashah {joshbekashah: designated leader}, and his sons {banav: direct descendants} and his brothers together numbered twelve.
25 For the eighteenth{lishmonah asar: roster position}, to Hanani: his sons and his brothers{echav: close kin}, twelve.
26 For the nineteenth {tishah asar: course number}, for Mallothi {malloti: appointed leader}, his sons and his brothers, twelve.
27 The twentieth {eserim: group designation} went to Eliathah with his sons and his brothers, twelve {shenayim asar: compound numeration}.
28 For Hothir, in the twenty-first {echad v’esrim: ordinal construct} allotment, his sons {banav: male offspring} and his brothers were twelve.
29 The twenty-second {esrim: double tens} division was for Giddalti; his sons and his brothers were twelve {shneim asar: group of twelve}.
30 The twenty-third {shlosha ve-esrim: ordinal sequence} division belonged to Mahazioth, his sons and his brothers, numbering twelve {shnayim asar: total members}.
31 The twenty-fourth {arba'ah we-esrim: ordinal expression} was assigned to Romamti-Ezer with his sons and his brothers {echav: extended family members}, numbering twelve.
