21. Linguistic Exegesis
The verse is a coordinated nominal clause introduced by the conjunction in vaʿadayah {וַעֲדָיָ֧ה | ʿă-dā-yāh} ‘and Adaiah’, followed by a vav-coordinated list in uberaiah {וּבְרָאיָ֛ה | ū-bə-rā-ʾā-yāh} ‘and Beraiah’ and vesimrath {וְשִׁמְרָ֖ת | wə-šim-rāṯ} ‘and Shimrath’. This vav-conjunction chain emphasizes equal status among the names. The construct noun benei {בְּנֵ֥י | bə-nē} ‘sons of’ forms a genitival relationship with shim‘i {שִׁמְעִֽי | šim-ʿī} ‘Shimei’, indicating lineage. Hebrew omits an overt verb; in English we supply “were” to render the implied copula while preserving the verbless nominal clause structure.
