Exegesis

The causal clause introduced by kî {כִּֽי־ | kî} ‘for’ uses the Qal perfect naflu {נָפְלוּ | nāpə-lû} ‘they had fallen’, the prepositional phrase ʿalav {עָלָיו | ʿālāw} ‘upon him’, and lā-rōv {לָרֹב | lā-rōv} ‘in great number’ to denote mass defection.
