Exegesis

The Hiphil vayya‘ămîḏēm {וַיַּֽעֲמִידֵ֣ם | wayya‘ămîḏēm} ‘and he set them up’ introduces hierarchical structuring with the construct chain ləḇēṯ-’āḇōṯ {לְבֵית־אָב֗וֹת | ləḇēṯ-’āḇōṯ} ‘house of fathers’ modifying ləśārê hā-’ălāp̄îm ū-ləśārê hammē’ōṯ {לְשָׂרֵי הָאֲלָפִים וּלְשָׂרֵי הַמֵּאוֹת | ləśārê hā-’ălāp̄îm ū-ləśārê hammē’ōṯ} ‘commanders of thousands and of hundreds’.
