| 17. Formal Translation But Abishai son of Zeruiah came to his aid and struck the Philistine down, putting him to death. Then the men of David swore an oath to him, saying, “You shall not go out with us again to battle, and you will not extinguish the lamp of Israel.” |
| 17. Dynamic Translation When Abishai son of Zeruiah came to rescue him, he killed the Philistine. Then David’s men made him promise, “You must never go with us into the fight again, or you might put out the light of Israel.” |
