Acts 13:37ExegesisTAB

Acts 13 : 37 Resurrection | Incorruption | Victory
37. Linguistic Exegesis
The clause opens with hon {ὃν | hòn} “whom,” a relative pronoun that links back to Jesus as the one previously mentioned, fronted to highlight Him as the object of the coming verb. The conjunction de {δὲ | dè} “but” introduces a contrast with those who did undergo decay in the preceding context. The nominative theos {θεὸς | the-òs} “God” functions as the explicit agent of the resurrection verb egeiren {ἤγειρεν | ḗ-gei-ren} “raised,” with the aorist indicative presenting a decisive, completed event. The negated verb phrase ouk eiden {οὐκ εἶδεν | ouk eî-den} “did not see” uses eiden in the experiential sense “to undergo” rather than mere visual perception. Its direct object diaphthoran {διαφθοράν | dia-phtho-rán} “corruption” denotes bodily decay after death. The Greek word order places “whom … God raised” before the negation to stress that God’s act of raising Jesus is the reason He did not experience decay. In English, restructuring to “But He whom God raised did not see corruption” preserves the contrastive force of de and the causal implication between God’s raising and the absence of corruption.
