1 Now there were in Antioch {Antiocheia: Gentile mission center}, in the church that was there, prophets and teachers—Barnabas, Simeon who was called Niger, Lucius the Cyrenian, and Manaen, companion {syntrophos: closely reared associate} of Herod the tetrarch, and Saul.
2 While they were carrying out service to the Lord {Kyrios, Worshiped Sovereign} and fasting, the Holy Spirit {Pneuma Hagion, Sender of Workers} said, “Designate Barnabas and Saul for Me for the work to which I have called them.”
3 Then, after they had fasted {nesteusantes: worshipful abstaining} and prayed, and after laying their hands on them, they released {apelysan: formally released} them to go.
4 Therefore, they, having been sent out by the Holy Spirit {pneuma hagion, Mission Sender}, went down to Seleucia and from there sailed to Cyprus {Kupron: Mediterranean Island}.
5 And when they had arrived in Salamis, they were proclaiming the word of God {Theos, Source Of The Message} in the synagogues {synagoge: Jewish worship places} of the Jews, and they also had John as an assistant.
6 But after passing through the whole island as far as Paphos, they found a certain man, a magician {magon: occult practitioner}, a Jewish false prophet, to whom the name was Bar-Jesus {Bariesou: son of-Jesus}.
7 Who was with the proconsul Sergius Paulus, a man of intelligence {syneto: wise discernment}; this man, having summoned Barnabas and Saul, sought to hear the word of God {Theos, Revealed Truth Giver}.
8 But Elymas the magician {magos: occult practitioner} was opposing them, for thus his name is interpreted, seeking to turn the proconsul away from the faith {pisteos: gospel message}.
9 But Saul, who was also called Paul, filled with the Holy Spirit {Pneuma Hagion, Guiding Power}, stared intently {atenisas: fixed his gaze} at him.
10 And he said, “O you full of all deceit {dolos: crafty deception} and all villainy, son of the devil, enemy of all righteousness, will you not stop perverting the straight ways of the Lord {Kyrios, Upright Guide}?”
11 And now, behold, the hand of the Lord {Kyrios, Righteous Judge} is upon you, and you will be blind, not seeing the sun until a season. Immediately, then, mist and darkness fell upon him, and going about, he was seeking those {kheiragōgous: hand-guides} to lead him by the hand.
12 Then the proconsul {anthypatos: Roman provincial governor}, having seen what had happened, believed, being astonished at the teaching of the Lord {Kyrios, Faith-Inspiring Lord}.
13 Having set sail from Paphos {Paphou: coastal city}, Paul and those with him came to Perga in Pamphylia; but John, having left them, returned to Jerusalem {Hierosoluma: central holy city}.
14 But they, having traveled from Perga, arrived at Antioch in Pisidia, and having entered into the synagogue {synagoge: Jewish meeting place} on the Sabbath day {sabbaton: weekly rest day}, they sat down.
15 And after the reading of the Law and the Prophets, the synagogue rulers {archisynagogoi: chief overseers} sent to them, saying, “Men, brothers, if there is among you a word of exhortation {parakleseos: earnest encouragement} for the people, speak.”
16 Then Paul stood up and, motioning with his hand, he said, “Men of Israel, and you who fear God {Theos, Revered Ruler Here}, listen {akouo: give attentive hearing}.”
17 The God {Theos, Covenant Chooser} of this people Israel chose our fathers and made the people great while they were sojourning {paroikia: temporary residence} in the land of Egypt, and with an uplifted arm He led them out of it.
18 And for about forty years He {Theos, Patient Sustainer} bore with them in the wilderness {eremo: desolate region}.
19 And after He {Theos, Covenant Fulfiller} destroyed seven nations in the land of Canaan, He gave their land to them as an inheritance {katakleronomeo: divine allotment}.
20 For about four hundred and fifty years and after these things He {Theos, Faithful Ruler} gave judges {kritas: appointed deliverers} until Samuel the prophet
21 And from there they requested a king, and God {Theos, Sovereign Giver} gave them Saul the son of Kish, a man from the tribe {phules: ancestral division} of Benjamin, for forty years {ete: measured duration}.
22 And after removing him, He {Theos, Sovereign Chooser} raised up David for them as king, to whom He also said, after bearing witness, “I have found David, the son of Jesse, a man after My own heart {kardia: inner character and will}, who will do all My will.”
23 From the offspring of this man, God {Theos, Promise Fulfiller} brought to Israel a Savior {soter: deliverer}, Jesus, according to His promise.
24 Before His {Iesous, Promised Deliverer} coming, John {Iōannēs: Preparatory Herald} had proclaimed a baptism of repentance {metanoia: inner turning} to all the people of Israel.
25 And as John was completing his course {dromon: appointed race}, he was saying, “What do you suppose me to be? I am not he, but behold, One is coming after me, the sandal {hupodema: simple footwear} of whose feet I am not worthy to loosen.”
26 Men, brothers, sons of the race of Abraham, and those among you who fear God {Theos, Worthy Of Reverence}, to us the word of this salvation {soterias: saving deliverance} has been sent.
27 For those who dwell in Jerusalem and their rulers, not recognizing Him {Iesous, Rejected Messiah} or the voices of the prophets that are read every Sabbath {sabbaton: weekly day of rest}, by condemning Him they fulfilled them.
28 And though they found no cause of death in Him {Iesous, Innocent Sufferer}, they requested Pilate {Pilatos: Roman governor} that He be put to death.
29 And when they had completed all the things that were written concerning Him {Iesous, Crucified Messiah}, having taken Him down from the tree {xylon: wooden cross}, they placed Him in a tomb.
30 But God {Theos, Resurrection Worker} raised Him from the dead {nekros: physically lifeless}.
31 He {Iesous, Resurrected One} was seen for many days by those who went up with Him from Galilee to Jerusalem, who now are His witnesses to the people {laos: covenant nation}.
32 And we {hemeis: Eyewitness Heralds} bring you the good news of the promise that was made to the fathers {pateras: covenant ancestors}.
33 That God {Theos, Promise Fulfiller} has fulfilled this for our children, having raised up Jesus {Iesous, Risen Son}, just as it is written in the second psalm: ‘You are My Son; today I have begotten You.’
34 But that He {Theos, Faithful Promise Keeper} raised Him from the dead, no longer destined to return to decay, He has spoken in this way: “I will give to you the holy {hosia: faithful mercies} things of David, the sure ones.”
35 Because He {Theos, Covenant Promise Keeper} also says in another psalm, “You will not permit Your Holy One {hosios: set-apart One} to see corruption.”
36 For David, after he had served the purpose of God {Theos, Sovereign Planner} in his own generation, he fell asleep and was added to his fathers and saw corruption {diaphthoran: bodily decay}.
37 But He whom God {Theos, Resurrection Initiator} raised did not see corruption {diaphthoran: decay or destruction}.
38 Therefore let it be known {gnōston: made known} to you, men, brothers, that through this One {Iesous, Promised Redeemer} forgiveness of sins is proclaimed to you.
39 In Him {Iesous, Risen Justifier}, everyone who believes is justified from all things, from which you could not be justified in the law {nomos: Torah requirements} of Moses.
40 Therefore, watch out {blepete: remain vigilant}, lest what has been spoken {eirēmenon: prior prophetic message} in the prophets should come upon you.
41 Look, you despisers {kataphronetai: those who scorn}, and be astonished and perish {aphanisthate: be destroyed}, because I {Theos, Sovereign Worker} am doing a work in your days, a work which you will by no means believe, even if someone fully tells it to you.
42 And as they were going out, they kept urging that these words {rhemata: spoken message} be spoken to them on the next Sabbath {sabbaton: Sabbath rest day}.
43 And after the synagogue had been dismissed, many of the Jews and of the worshipping proselytes {proselutos: Gentile converts} followed Paul and Barnabas, who, speaking with them, were persuading them to continue in the grace of God {Theos, Sustaining Giver of Grace}.
44 But on the coming Sabbath {sabbaton: weekly sacred day}, almost the whole city was gathered to hear the word of the Lord {Kyrios, Source Of Message}.
45 But when the Jews {Ioudaioi: community leaders} saw the crowds, they were filled with jealousy and began to contradict what was being said by Paul, blaspheming {blasphemountes: speaking irreverently}.
46 And after Paul and Barnabas had spoken boldly, they said, “It was necessary for the word of God {Theos, Covenant God Of Israel} to be spoken to you first. But since you are rejecting it and do not consider yourselves worthy {axios: deserving by standard} of eternal life, behold, we are turning to the Gentiles.”
47 For thus the Lord {Kyrios, Mission Commander} has commanded us: “I have set you as a light {phos: illuminating guide} for the nations, so that you may be for salvation to the end of the earth.”
48 But when the nations {ethne: non-Jewish peoples} were hearing this, they rejoiced and glorified the word of the Lord {Kyrios, Message Source}, and as many as were appointed to eternal life believed.
49 And the word of the Lord {Kyrios, Sovereign Sender} was being spread throughout all the region {chora: district or territory}.
50 But the Jews {Ioudaioi: religious opponents} incited the devout women who were noble {euschemonas: highly respected} and the leading men of the city, and stirred up persecution against Paul and Barnabas, and expelled them from their district.
