Acts 14:27ExegesisTAB

Acts 14 : 27 Proclamation | Faith | Inclusion
27. Linguistic Exegesis
The verse begins with two aorist participles, paragenomenoi {παραγενόμενοι | paragenómenoi} ‘having arrived’ and synagagontes {συναγαγόντες | synagagóntes} ‘having gathered together’, which establish the temporal background for the narrative action. These participles precede the imperfect verb anēngellon {ἀνήγγελλον | anḗngellon} ‘they were reporting’, highlighting an ongoing recounting of events. The relative pronoun hosa {ὅσα | hósa} introduces the totality of the report as “all that” God had done. In the clause epoiēsen ho theos met’ autōn {ἐποίησεν ὁ θεὸς μετʼ αὐτῶν | epoiḗsen ho theós metʼ autôn}, the placement of ho theos before the verb emphasizes God’s agency and the use of met’ with the genitive stresses partnership with the missionaries. A coordinating hoti {ὅτι | hóti} clause, hoti ēnoixen tois ethnesin thyran pisteōs {ὅτι ἤνοιξεν τοῖς ἔθνεσιν θύραν πίστεως | hóti ḗnoixen tois éthnesin thýran písteōs}, specifies the result of divine action: God opened an access point, metaphorically, for the nations. The genitive pisteōs {πίστεως | písteōs} functions as a genitive of means, defining the “door” as pertaining to faith. English translations render the temporal aorist participles as past perfect (“had arrived,” “had gathered”) in the formal reconstruction and as simple past in the dynamic reconstruction to maintain readability while preserving aspect. The imperfect is conveyed by continuous or iterative phrasing to reflect ongoing narration.
