Exegesis

The cluster Phrygian te kai Pamphylian, Aigypton kai ta mere tēs Libuēs tēs kata Kurenēn {Φρυγίαν τε καὶ Παμφυλίαν Αἴγυπτον καὶ τὰ μέρη τῆς Λιβύης τῆς κατὰ Κυρήνην | Phrygían te kaí Pamphylían Aígupton kaí tà mé-rē tês Libúēs tês katá Kurḗnēn} forms a coordinated list of regions in Asia Minor and North Africa. The phrase ta mere tēs Libuēs tēs kata Kurenēn places the articular genitive tēs kata Kurenēn in the second attributive position, so that Libya is further specified as “the Libya that is according to (that is, facing or around) Cyrene,” justifying the rendering “the regions of Libya near Cyrene.”
