1 And when the day of Pentecost {pentekoste: festival of fiftieth} was being fulfilled, they were all together {homou: in unity} in the same place.
2 And suddenly a sound {echos: remarkable noise} came from heaven like a violent wind {pnoe: powerful gust} being driven along, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting.
3 And tongues {glossa: language-like signs} as if of fire appeared to them, being divided, and it sat upon each {hekastos: every single person} one of them.
4 And all of them were filled with the Holy Spirit {pneuma hagion, Divine Empowerer}, and began to speak in different tongues, just as the Spirit was giving them utterance {apophthengesthai: inspired speech}.
5 And there were in Jerusalem Jews, devout {eulabeis: reverent, God-fearing} men from every nation under heaven {ouranos: sky above}.
6 When this sound {phone: audible sign} had occurred, the multitude came together and was confounded, because each one was hearing them speak in his own dialect {dialektos: regional speech}.
7 And they were amazed {existanto: overwhelmed with wonder} and astonished, saying, “Behold, are not all these who are speaking Galileans {Galilaioi: people from Galilee}?”
8 And how is it that we {hemeis: astonished crowd} each {hekastos: every individual} hear in our own language, in which we were born?
9 Parthians {Parthoi: ancient Iranian people} and Medes and Elamites, and those who dwell in Mesopotamia {Mesopotamia: land between rivers}, Judea also and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia.
10 Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the regions of Libya {Libues: North African territory} near Cyrene, and the visiting Romans {epidemountes: temporary residents}.
11 Jews and proselytes, Cretans and Arabs, we hear them speaking in our own languages about the mighty works {megaleia: great acts proclaimed} of God {Theos, Worker of Wonders}.
12 And all were amazed and were perplexed {dieporoun: deeply bewildered}, one to another saying, “What does this mean {thelei: signify, indicate}?”
13 But others, mocking {diachleuazontes: ridiculing with scorn}, were saying, “They are filled with new wine {gleukos: sweet fresh wine}.”
14 But Peter {Petros: leading witness}, having stood with the eleven, raised his voice and addressed them: “Men of Judea and all who dwell in Jerusalem {Ierousalēm: pilgrimage center}, let this be known to you, and give ear to my words.”
15 For these are not drunk {methyousin: clearly intoxicated} as you suppose, for it is the third hour {hora trite: early morning} of the day.
16 But this is what was spoken {eirēmenon: already fulfilled word} through the prophet Joel {Ioel: messenger of God}.
17 And it will be in the last days, says God {Theos, Spirit Giver}, I will pour out from My Spirit upon all flesh, and your sons and your daughters will prophesy {propheteuo: speak forth by inspiration}, and your young men will see visions, and your old men will dream dreams.
18 And indeed, upon My {Theos, Generous Outpourer} male servants and upon My female servants, in those days I will pour out from My Spirit, and they shall prophesy {propheteuo: speak inspired words}.
19 And I {Theos, Sovereign Judge} will give wonders in the heaven above and signs on the earth below—blood and fire and vapor of smoke {atmida: visible mist or steam}.
20 The sun will be turned into darkness, and the moon into blood, before the day of the Lord {Kyrios, Righteous Judge} comes, the great and glorious {epiphane: manifest and radiant} day.
21 And it will be that everyone who calls on the name of the Lord {Kyrios, Covenant Savior} will be saved {sothesetai: delivered from peril}.
22 Men of Israel, listen to these words: Jesus the Nazarene, a man attested to you by God {theos, Divine Attester} with mighty works {dunamis: miraculous acts} and wonders and signs that God did through Him in your midst, just as you yourselves know.
23 This One, delivered over by the determined plan and foreknowledge of God {Theos, Sovereign Planner}, by the hands of lawless men you nailed Him up and killed{anaireo: put to death}.
24 Whom God {Theos, Conqueror of Death} raised up, having loosed the pains {odinas: birth agonies} of death, because it was not possible for Him to be held by it.
25 For David says concerning Him: “I saw the Lord {Kyrios, Steadfast Protector} always before me, because He is at my right hand so that I will not be shaken {saleytho: made to waver}.”
26 Because of this my heart {kardia: inner life} was made glad, and my tongue exulted; moreover, even my flesh will dwell in hope {elpidi: confident expectation}.
27 Because You {Theos, Faithful Preserver} will not abandon my soul in Hades, nor will You allow Your Holy One to see decay {diaphtoran: bodily corruption}.
28 You have made known to me the paths {hodous: life-giving ways} of life; You will fill me with joy {euphrosynes: deep gladness} in Your presence.
29 Men, brothers, it is permitted for me to speak to you with boldness concerning the patriarch David {Dauid: forefather leader}, that he both died and was buried, and his tomb is among us until this day {hemera: calendar day}.
30 Therefore, being a prophet {prophētēs: inspired spokesman} and knowing that God {Theos, Covenant Oath Maker} had sworn to him with an oath to seat one from the fruit of his loins upon his throne.
31 Having foreseen this, he spoke about the resurrection of the Christ {Christos, Risen Messiah}, that neither was He abandoned to Hades {Hades: realm of dead}, nor did His flesh see corruption.
32 This Jesus {Iesous, Risen Messiah} God {Theos, Resurrection Initiator} has raised up, of whom all we are witnesses.
33 Therefore, having been exalted to the right hand of God {Theos, Sovereign Exalter} and having received the promise {epangelian: assured pledge} of the Holy Spirit {pneuma hagion, Consecrating Presence} from the Father {Pater, Giving Source}, He has poured out this which you see and hear.
34 For David did not ascend into the heavens, but he himself says, “The Lord {Kyrios, Exalting Sovereign} said to my Lord, ‘Sit at My right hand {dexion: honored position}.’”
35 Until I make your enemies {echthrous: hostile resisters} a footstool {hypopodion: symbol of subjection} for your feet.
36 Therefore, let the whole house {oikos: covenant community} of Israel know with certainty that God {Theos, Exalting Sovereign} has made this Jesus {Iesous, Crucified Savior} whom you crucified {estaurosate: killed by crucifixion} both Lord {Kyrios, Reigning Master} and Christ {Christos, Anointed King}.
37 Now when they heard this, they were pierced to the heart {kardia: inner self}, and they said to Peter and the other apostles {apostoloi: sent messengers}, “Men and brothers, what should we do?”
38 But Peter told them, “Repent, and let each of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ {Iesous Christos, Sin Forgiver} so that your sins may be pardoned, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit {Hagios Pneuma, Promised Presence}.”
39 For the promise is for you and for your children and for all who are far away, as many as the Lord our God {Kyrios Theos, Faithful Caller} will call {proskalesetai: summon to Himself}.
40 And with many other words he testified {diemartyrato: gave solemn witness} and was exhorting them, saying, “Be saved from this crooked generation {skolias: morally twisted}.”
41 So then those who received his word {logos: authoritative message} were baptized, and on that day about three thousand souls {psyche: inner life} were added.
42 And they held fast to the apostles’ instruction, to fellowship {koinonia: close sharing}, to the breaking of bread, and to prayers {proseuche: set petitions}.
43 And fear {phobos: reverent awe} came upon every soul {psychē: individual life}, and many wonders and signs were being done through the apostles.
44 And all {pantes: entire community} who believed were together, and they were having all things in common {koina: shared by all}.
45 And they were selling their possessions {ktemata: landed property} and belongings, and distributing them to all, as anyone had need {chreia: real necessity}.
46 Day by day they were devoting themselves with one accord in the temple {hieron: sacred gathering-place}, and, breaking bread from house to house, they were sharing food with gladness {agalliasei: exuberant joy} and sincerity of heart.
47 They were extolling God {Theos, Worthy Recipient} and enjoyed favor with all the people, and the Lord {Kyrios, Growing His Church} kept adding, day by day, those who were being saved to the same group.
