Deuteronomy 15:10ExegesisTAB

Deuteronomy 15 : 10 Generosity | Blessing | Attitude
10. Linguistic Exegesis
The Hebrew employs an infinitive absolute plus imperfect in naton titten {nāṯôn tit-tên | נָת֤וֹן תִּתֵּן֙} ‘giving, you shall give’ to intensify the obligation. The negated imperfect velo yera‘ levavkha {wə-lō yērā‘ lə-ḇā-və-ḵā | וְלֹא־יֵרַע לְבָבְךָ} ‘and not let your heart be evil’ captures an internal attitude warning. The causal clause ki biglal hadavar haze {kî bi-ḡlal ha-dā-var haz-zeh | כִּי בִּגְלַל הַדָּבָר הַזֶּה} ‘because on account of this matter’ links generosity to divine response. The blessing formula yevarekkha Yahweh eloheikha {yə-vā-rə-ḵā Yə-hō-wāh ʾĕ-lō-ḗ-ḵā | יְבָרֶכְךָ יְהוָה אֱלֹהֶיךָ} uses the Piel imperfect to convey certain future beneficence. The parallel prepositional phrases bekhol maasekha uvekhol mishlakh yadekha {bə-ḵōl ma-‛ă-se-ḵā u-və-ḵōl mish-lā-ḥ yā-ḏə-ḵā | בְּכָל־מַעֲשֶׂךָ וּבְכֹל מִשְׁלַח יָדֶךָ} reinforce the comprehensive scope of the promised blessing.
