Deuteronomy 18:2ExegesisTAB

Deuteronomy 18 : 2 Inheritance | Promise | Provision
2. Linguistic Exegesis
The verse opens with venachalah {וְנַחֲלָה | wə-naḥă-lāh} ‘inheritance’, prefaced by the conjunction vav to link this decree to the preceding law. The negation lo {לֹא | lōʾ} plus the Qal imperfect yiḥyēh {יִֽהְיֶה | yiḥyēh} creates a prohibition. The locative be-qerev echav {בְּקֶ֣רֶב אֶחָיו | bə-qereḇ ’eḥāyw} specifies placement “among his brothers.” The focus then shifts to Yahweh {יְהוָה | Yə-hōwāh} with the emphatic pronoun hu {הוּא | hūʾ}, identifying the LORD as the exclusive heir. Nachalato {נַחֲלָת֔וֹ | naḥă-lāṯōw} reiterates divine possession. The relative ka-asher {כַּאֲשֶׁר | kā-ʼă-šer} introduces the clause with the Piel perfect dibber-lo {דִּבֶּר־לֽוֹ | dibbēr-lōw} ‘he spoke to him,’ tying the inheritance to God’s prior declaration. The structure of prohibition followed by affirmation underscores the Levites’ unique status.
