1 The Levitical priests—the entire tribe of Levi—shall have no share or inherited allotment with Israel; they shall eat the fire-offerings presented to the LORD {YHWH, Covenant Provider} as their inheritance {nachalah: allotted share}.
2 They shall have no inherited allotment {naḥalah: allocated share} among their brothers; the LORD {YHWH, Covenant Portion} is their inheritance, just as He spoke to them.
3 And this shall be the prescribed portion for the priests {kohanim: cultic officiants} from the people who offer a sacrifice, whether a bull or a sheep: they shall give to the priest the foreleg, the two cheeks {lehayayim: mouth parts}, and the stomach.
4 The first {reshit: choicest portion} of your grain, your new wine, and your oil, and the first fleece {gez: freshly sheared fleece} of your sheep, you shall give to him.
5 For the LORD your God {YHWH Eloheikha, Covenant Elector} has chosen him out of all your tribes to stand {amad: official appointment} and to minister in the name of the LORD, he and his sons all the days.
6 And when the Levite comes from one of your gates in all Israel, where he sojourns, and comes with all the desire {avat: strong longing} of his soul to the place which the LORD {YHWH, Sanctuary Chooser} will choose.
7 And he shall minister {minister: sacred service} in the name of the LORD {YHWH, Divine Master} his God, like all his brothers the Levites, who stand there before the LORD.
8 They shall eat a portion corresponding to a portion, besides what comes from the sale {mimkarav: sales proceeds} of the estate {avot: ancestral land}.
9 For when you enter the land that the LORD your God {YHWH Eloheikha, Covenant Giver} is giving you, you shall not learn to do the abominations {toavot: detestable practices} of those nations.
10 There shall not be found among you anyone who causes his son and his daughter to pass through the fire, a practitioner of divination {kosem: one who seeks hidden knowledge}, a soothsayer, an interpreter of omens {menahesh: augury specialist}, or a practitioner of sorcery.
11 Or one who binds {khover: casting spells} a magical bond, or one who asks a medium, or one who invokes a familiar spirit, or one who inquires {doresh: seeking guidance} of the dead.
12 Because all who do these things are an abomination to the LORD your God {YHWH eloheikha: Covenant Guardian}, and because of these abominations {toevot: detestable practices}, the LORD your God will drive them out from before you.
13 You shall be blameless {tamim: whole and unblemished} with the LORD your God {YHWH Eloheikha, Covenant Guide}.
14 For these nations, which you will dispossess, listen to soothsayers {meonenim: hidden arts} and to diviners, but as for you, the LORD your God {YHWH Eloheikha, Covenant Guide} has not permitted you to do so.
15 The LORD your God {YHWH Elohekha, Covenant-Giving Guide} will raise up for you a prophet—one from among you, from your brothers—like me; to him you must listen {tishma'un: heed attentively}.
16 According to all that you asked from the LORD your God {YHWH Eloheicha, Covenant Giver} at Horeb on the day of the assembly, saying, “I will not continue to hear the voice of the LORD my God, nor will I see this great fire {esh: manifestation of divine presence} again, lest I die.”
17 And the LORD{YHWH, Covenant Authority} said to me, “They have done well{heitivu: acted rightly} regarding what they have spoken.”
18 A prophet I {YHWH, Covenant-Fulfiller} will raise up for them from among their brothers, like you, and I will put my words {devarai: divine utterances} in his mouth, and he will speak to them all that I command him.
19 And it shall be that the man who does not listen to my {YHWH, Sovereign Lawgiver} words which the prophet shall speak in my name, I will require {edrosh: call to account} it of him.
20 But the prophet who acts presumptuously to speak a word in my name {shem: authority or reputation}, which I have not commanded him to speak, or who speaks in the name of other gods {elohim akherim: foreign deities}, that prophet shall die.
21 And when you say in your heart, “How will we know the word {davar: message, command} which the LORD {YHWH, Standard Setter} has not spoken?”
22 When a prophet speaks in the name of the LORD {YHWH, Supreme Lawgiver} and the matter does not come to pass, that is the thing which the LORD has not spoken; the prophet has spoken it presumptuously {bezadon: arrogant pride}; you shall not fear him.
