| 9. Linguistic Exegesis The verse opens with the conjunction ki {כִּי | kî} indicating a conditional sense, followed by the finite verb tishmor {תִשְׁמֹר | tišmôr} “you shall keep,” which takes et-kol-ham-mitzvah-hazot {אֶת־כָּל־הַמִּצְוָ֨ה הַזֹּ֜את | ʾet-kol-hammîṣwâh-hazzôt} as its direct object. The infinitive construct la‘asotah {לַעֲשֹׂתָהּ | la-‘ăśôtāh} “to do it” explicates the action, while the relative clause ’asher ’ănōkî mĕṣavvêḵā hayyôm {אֲשֶׁר אָנֹכִי מְצַוְּךָ הַיּוֹם | ’ăšer ’ănōḵî məṣavvêḵā hayyôm} frames it as direct divine speech. Two parallel infinitives, le’ehăvâh {לְאַהֲבָה | lə-’ăhăḇâh} and wĕ-la-heleḵet {וְלָלֶכֶת | wə-la-leḵet}, coordinate affection and conduct. Bidrāḵāw kol ha-yāmîm {בִּדְרָכָיו כָּל־הַיָּמִים | bi-d’rāḵāw kol-hayyāmîm} “in His ways all the days” intensifies continuous obedience. The consec. vav with yāspaṯā {וְיָסַפְתָּ | wə-yāspaṯā} marks the resultant addition, with lĕḵā ’ôḏ šālōš ’ărîm ʿal ha-šālōš hā-’êleh {לְךָ עוֹד שָׁלֹשׁ עָרִים עַל הַשָּׁלֹשׁ הָאֵלֶּה | ləḵā ’ôḏ šālōš ’ărîm ʿal-ha-šālōš hā-’êleh} specifying the enlargement of refuge cities. The English reconstructions preserve Hebrew parataxis and highlight the covenantal link between obedience, love, and divine provision. |
