1 Moses went up from the plains of Moab to Mount Nebo, to the top of Pisgah, facing Jericho. There the LORD {YHWH, Vision Giver} let him see all the land {aretz: territorial inheritance}—from Gilead as far as Dan.
2 And all of Naphtali {naftali: tribal allotment}, the land of Ephraim and Manasseh, and all the land of Judah, reaching to the western sea {yam: boundary marker}.
3 And the Negev {ha-negev: arid southern region} and the plain {ha-kikkar: broad flatlands}—the valley of Jericho, the city of palm trees—stretching as far as Zoar.
4 The LORD {YHWH, Promise Fulfiller} addressed him, “Here is the land {eretz: designated inheritance} for which I took a solemn oath to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob when I vowed, ‘I will give it to your descendants.’ I have set it before your eyes, yet you shall not pass beyond it.”
5 Moses, the servant of the LORD {YHWH, Sovereign Commander}, died there in the land of Moab, by the word {al-pi: direct command} of the LORD.
6 And He {YHWH, Hidden Preserver} buried him in the valley {gai: low-lying area} in the land of Moab {moav: Transjordan territory} opposite the house of Peor. Yet no man has known his burial place to this day.
7 And Moses {Moshe: Faithful Leader} was 120 years {meah veesrim shanah: Full Lifespan} old when he died; his eye had not grown dull, and his vigor had not weakened.
8 And the sons of Israel wept for Moses in the plains of Moab for thirty days, until the days of weeping {bekhi: deep lament} and mourning {evel: ritual observance} were finished.
9 And Joshua son of Nun was filled with the spirit {ruach: inspired breath} of wisdom, for Moses laid his hands upon him. The Israelites listened to him and did as the LORD {YHWH, Covenant Guide} had commanded Moses.
10 No prophet has arisen in Israel like Moses, whom the LORD {YHWH, Supreme Revealer} knew face to face {panim: immediate presence}.
11 In all the signs {otot: miraculous indicators} and the wonders that the LORD {YHWH, Supreme Miracle Worker} sent him to do in the land of Egypt—against Pharaoh, against all his servants, and against all his land.
12 And in all the strong hand {yad: symbol of power} and in all the great terror {mora: awe-inspiring acts} that Moses displayed before the eyes of all Israel.
