Exodus 13:5ExegesisTAB

Exodus 13 : 5 Promise | Inheritance | Worship
5. Linguistic Exegesis
The verse opens with vehayah {וְהָיָ֣ה | wə-hā-yāh} ‘and it shall be’, setting a future-oriented conditional, followed by the conjunction and Hiphil imperfect ki-yeviacha {כִּי־יְבִֽיאֲךָ֣ | kî-yᵉ-vî-ʾă-ḵâ} ‘when he brings you’. The sequence el-erets ha-kenaani ve-ha-chitti ve-ha-emori ve-ha-hivi ve-ha-yevusi {אֶל־אֶרֶץ הַכְּנַעֲנִי וְהַחִתִּי וְהָאֱמֹרִי וְהַחִוִּי וְהַיְבוּסִי | ʾel-ʾe-reṣ ha-kə-ʿa-nə-nî və-ha-ḥit-tî və-hā-ʾə-mō-rî və-ha-ḥî-wî və-ha-ye-vû-sî} lists the nations with vav-conjunctions. The relative pronoun asher {אֲשֶׁ֨ר | ʾă-šer} ‘that’ introduces a clause with the Niphal perfect nishba {נִשְׁבַּ֤ע | niš-bāʿ} ‘he swore’, anchored to la-avoteikha {לַאֲבֹתֶ֙יךָ֙ | la-ʾă-ḇō-tê-ḵā} ‘your fathers’. The description erets zavat chalav u-devash {אֶרֶץ זָבַת חָלָב וּדְבָשׁ | ʾe-reṣ zā-ḇat ḥā-lāḇ u-ḏə-ḇāš} functions as a fertility merism. Finally, the vav-consecutive ve-avadta {וְעָבַדְתָּ֛ | və-ʿā-ḇad-tā} issues the obligation, and the temporal phrase ba-chodesh ha-zeh {בַּחֹדֶשׁ הַזֶּה | ba-ḥō-deš haz-zé} specifies the appointed month.
