Exegesis

The Qal lamed-infinitive vayāsem le-charāvāh {וַיָּ֥שֶׂם לֶחָרָבָ֑ה | way·yā·sem lă-ḥā-rā·wāh} specifies resultant transformation, and the Nifal imperfect vayibbaqu hamayim {וַיִּבָּקְע֖וּ הַמָּֽיִם | way·yib-bā·q‘û ham-mā·yim} delivers the climactic parting of the waters.
