1 And the LORD {YHWH, Deliverer} spoke to Moses {Mosheh: appointed leader}, saying,
2 Speak to the sons of Israel, and let them turn back and encamp before Pi {pi: opening, geographic pass} Hahiroth {ha-chi-rot: narrow gorge}, between Migdol and the sea, before Baal Zephon; opposite it, you shall encamp by the sea.
3 Pharaoh will say to the Israelites, “They are confused{nevukhim: in distress} in the land, and the wilderness has shut them in{sagar: completely enclosed}.”
4 And I will harden Pharaoh’s heart {lev: inner resolve}, and he will pursue them. Then I will be glorified through Pharaoh and all his army, and the Egyptians will know that I am the LORD {YHWH, Sovereign Judge}. And they did so.
5 And it was reported to the king of Egypt that the people had fled, and the heart of Pharaoh {paroh: royal authority} and his servants was changed toward the people, and they said, “What is this we have done, that we have sent Israel {yisrael: covenant nation} away from serving us?”
6 So Pharaoh {Paro: Sovereign Ruler} harnessed his chariot {rikhvo: War Vehicle}, and he took his people with him.
7 And he took six hundred choice chariots {rechev: war vehicles} and all the chariots of Egypt {mitsrayim: land of bondage}, with officers over all of them.
8 And the LORD {YHWH, Sovereign Ruler} strengthened the heart of Pharaoh the king of Egypt and pursued the sons of Israel, but the sons of Israel went out with a high hand {ramah: uplifted strength}.
9 The Egyptians pursued them and overtook them as they were camped by the sea, with all of Pharaoh’s horses and chariots, his horsemen and his army, by Pi Hahiroth {pi-hachirot: gorge pass}, before Baal Zephon {baal tsefon: Canaanite storm deity sanctuary}.
10 And Pharaoh drew near, and the sons of Israel lifted their eyes, and behold, Egypt {Mitsrayim: enemy nation} was marching after them, and they were greatly afraid, and the sons of Israel cried out to the LORD {YHWH, Deliverer}.
11 And they said to Moses, “Is it because there are no graves in Egypt that you have taken us away to die in the wilderness {midbar: arid region}? What is this that you have done to us in bringing us out of Egypt {Mitsrayim: land of confinement}?”
12 Is this not the very word{davar: spoken matter} that we spoke to you in Egypt, saying “Leave us alone and let us serve the Egyptians”? For it would have been better for us to serve the Egyptians than to die in the wilderness{midbar: arid wasteland}.
13 And Moses said to the people, “Do not fear. Stand firm and see the salvation of the LORD {YHWH, Mighty Deliverer} which He will work for you today {hayyom: at this present time}. For the Egyptians whom you have seen today, you will never see them again, forever.”
14 The LORD {YHWH, Divine Warrior} will fight for you, and you must remain silent {tacharishun: utter stillness}.
15 Then the LORD {YHWH, Deliverance Commander} said to Moses, “Why are you crying out to Me? Speak to the sons of Israel {benei Yisrael: covenant people}, and let them set out.”
16 And you, raise your staff and stretch out your hand over the sea and divide it {veka’ehu: part the waters}, and the sons of Israel shall go through the midst of the sea on the dry ground {yabashah: dry land surface}.
17 And I {YHWH, Sovereign Actor}—behold, I am hardening the hearts {lev: inner resolve} of the Egyptians, and they will come after them; and I will be honored through Pharaoh and through all his army, through his chariots and through his horsemen.
18 And the Egyptians will know that I am the LORD {YHWH, Supreme Revealer} when I am glorified {hikavdi: weighty honor} through Pharaoh, through his chariots, and through his horsemen.
19 And the angel of God {Elohim, Divine Protector} who was going before the camp of Israel set out and went behind them. And the pillar {amud: visible presence} of cloud also set out from before them and stood behind them.
20 And it came {vayavo: sovereign boundary-setting} between the camp of Egypt and the camp of Israel; it was a cloud and darkness {hachoshekh: separating gloom} to them, but it gave light to the night for these; and neither camp drew near the other all night.
21 And Moses stretched out his hand over the sea {yam: mighty expanse}, and the LORD {YHWH, Miracle Worker} caused it to recede with a strong east wind all night, turning it into dry land, and the waters were divided.
22 The Israelites {benei yisrael: covenant descendants} walked through the midst of the sea on dry ground, and the waters became a wall {choma: protective barrier} for them on their right and on their left.
23 The Egyptians pursued and came after them, all the horses of Pharaoh, his chariotry {rikhbo: chariot corps}, and his horsemen, into the midst {tokh: central point} of the sea.
24 And it came to pass during the morning watch that the LORD {YHWH, Divine Watcher} looked down upon the camp of the Egyptians in the pillar of fire {esh: supernatural flame} and cloud, and He threw the camp of the Egyptians into confusion.
25 And He {YHWH, Battle Champion} removed the wheels {ofan: turning piece} of their chariots, so that they drove with difficulty. And Egypt said, “Let us flee from before Israel, for the LORD is fighting for them against Egypt.”
26 Then the LORD {YHWH, Sovereign Commander} said to Moses, “Stretch out your hand {yad: instrument of power} over the sea, and the waters will return upon Egypt, upon his chariots, and upon his horsemen.”
27 And Moses stretched out his hand over the sea, and the sea returned at the turning of the morning to its full strength {leetano: original force}; and the Egyptians were fleeing toward it, and the LORD {YHWH, Divine Deliverer} overthrew the Egyptians in the midst of the sea.
28 And the waters returned and covered the chariots and the horsemen, the entire army of Pharaoh {Par‘oh: Royal Title} that pursued them into the sea, and not one {echad: Singular Survivor} remained among them.
29 But the Israelites {Yisrael: covenant people} walked on dry land in the middle of the sea, and the waters were for them a wall {chomah: solid barrier} from their right side and from their left.
30 And the LORD {YHWH, Savior} saved Israel on that day from the hand {yad: power/grasp} of Egypt, and Israel saw the Egyptians dead on the shore of the sea.
31 And Israel saw the great hand {yad: symbol of power} that the LORD {YHWH, Mighty Deliverer} had displayed against Egypt, and the people feared the LORD and believed in the LORD and in Moses, His servant.
