Exodus 17 : 10 Obedience | Leadership | Strategy
10. Linguistic Exegesis
The verse begins with the wayyiqtol form vayyaas {וַיַּ֣עַשׂ | way-yaʿaś} ‘and he did,’ continuing the narrative momentum. The conjunction kaasher {כַּאֲשֶׁ֤ר | ka-ʾă-šer} ‘just as’ introduces the clause amar-lo {אָֽמַר־לוֹ֙ | ʾā-mar-lō} ‘he said to him,’ tying Joshua’s action precisely to Moses’ word. The infinitive construct lehilachem {לְהִלָּחֵ֖ם | lə-hil-lā-ḥēm} expresses purpose ‘to fight,’ complemented by baamalek {בַּעֲמָלֵ֑ק | ba-ʿă-mā-lēq} ‘against Amalek.’ In the following coordinate clause, umosheh {וּמֹשֶׁה֙ | û-Mō-šeh} with aharon {אַהֲרֹן֣ | ʾa-hă-rōn} and vechur {וְח֔וּר | wə-ḥūr} governs alu {עָל֖וּ | ʿā-lû} ‘they went up,’ and the phrase rosh haggivah {רֹאשׁ֥ הַגִּבְעָֽה | rōʾš hag-gib-ʿāh} indicates movement to a raised viewpoint. The structure contrasts Joshua’s battlefield engagement with the elevated position of Moses, Aaron, and Hur.
