Exodus 21:13ExegesisTAB

Exodus 21 : 13 Accident | Providence | Sanctuary
13. Linguistic Exegesis
The verse opens with the relative conjunction va'asher {וַאֲשֶׁר | va-ʾă-šer} ‘and that/which’ introducing an alternative condition. The adversative lo {לֹא | lō} negates the action of lying in wait and distinguishes accidental from intentional killing. The conjunction veha'elohim {וְהָאֱלֹהִים | wə-hā-ʾĕ-lō-hîm} links divine agency to the causative innah {אִנָּה | ʾin-nāh} ‘caused’ combined with the prepositional phrase leyado {לְיָדוֹ | lə-yā-ḏō} ‘into his hand’ to express sovereign determination. The conjunction in veshamti {וְשַׂמְתִּי | wə-śam-tî} ‘and I appointed’ introduces the apodosis specifying the legal provision. The noun makom {מָקוֹם | mā-qôm} ‘place’ is modified by the relative clause introduced by asher {אֲשֶׁר | ʾă-šer} ‘where’ followed by the imperfect yanus {יָנוּס | yā-nûs} ‘he may flee’ and the locative shamah {שָׁמָּה | šā-mah} defining the sanctuary’s function within the legal framework.
