Exodus 38:21ExegesisTAB

Exodus 38 : 21 Tabernacle | Service | Priesthood
21. Linguistic Exegesis
The verse opens with the demonstrative eleh {אֵ֣לֶּה | ʾê-leh} ‘these’, signaling a categorical declaration. The construct chain pekudei hammiskan {פְקוּדֵ֤י הַמִּשְׁכָּן֙ | pə-qû-ḏêy hammîš-kān} ‘records of the tabernacle’ and miskan ha-edut {מִשְׁכַּ֣ן הָעֵדֻ֔ת | miš-kān hā-ʿē-ḏût} ‘the Tabernacle of Testimony’ employs successive construct-state relationships to define the object and its function. The relative clause asher pukad al-pi moshe {אֲשֶׁ֥ר פֻּקַּ֖ד עַל־פִּ֣י מֹשֶׁ֑ה | ʾă-šer pûq-qad ʿal-pî mō-šeh} ‘that was recorded at the command of Moses’ uses a Pual perfect in a defining relative clause to highlight authoritative confirmation. The phrases avodat halewiyim {עֲבֹדַת֙ הַלְוִּיִּ֔ם | ʿă-vô-ḏat hal-lĕ-wîy-yîm} ‘service of the Levites’ and be-yad ben-aharon hakohen {בְּיַד֙ בֶּן־אַהֲרֹ֖ן הַכֹּהֵֽן | bĕ-yad ben-ʾă-hă-rōn ha-kô-hên} ‘by the hand of Ithamar son of Aaron the priest’ specify cultic roles and supervisory authority. The English rendering preserves the double construct through apposition and conveys the passive nuance of the Hebrew Pual with a passive verb.
