Ezekiel 14:8ExegesisTAB

Ezekiel 14 : 8 Judgment | Exclusion | Recognition
8. Linguistic Exegesis
The verse opens with the vav-consecutive perfect venatati {וְנָתַתִּ֨י | wə-nā-ta-tî} panai {פָנַ֜י | pā-nay} 'set my face', an idiom denoting determined opposition. The direct object ba’ish hahu {בָּאִישׁ הַה֗וּא | bā-ʾîš hā-hûʾ} 'against that man' identifies the recipient. The Hiphil perfect vahasimotihu {וַהֲשִׂמֹתִ֙יהוּ֙ | wā-ha-šî-mō-tî-hû} expresses causation, introducing the result-states le-ot {לְאוֹת | lə-ʾōṯ} and velimshalim {וְלִמְשָׁלִ֔ים | wə-lim-šā-lîm} as instructive examples. The subsequent Hiphil perfect vehichrativ {וְהִכְרַתִּ֖יו | wə-hi-krā-tî-yû} indicates complete removal, with the prepositional phrase mitoch ammi {מִתּוֹךְ עַמִּי | miṯ-tôḵ ʿam-mî} 'from amid My people' marking exclusion. The Qal perfect veyidatem {וִידַעְתֶּם | wî-daʿ-tem} 'and you shall know' introduces a result clause, culminating in kiani Yahweh {כִּֽי־אֲנִ֥י יְהוָה | kî-ʾă-nî yə-hō-wāh}, which asserts divine authority through this judgment.
