Ezekiel 17:16ExegesisTAB

Ezekiel 17 : 16 Oath | Judgment | Betrayal
16. Linguistic Exegesis
The verse opens with the oath formula chai-ani {חַי־אָ֗נִי | ḥai-ʾānî} ‘as I live’, an emphatic divine guarantee. This is followed by the oracle marker neum Adonai Yahweh {נְאֻם אֲדֹנָי יְהוִה | nə'ûm ă·dō·nāy Yəhôwāh} ‘declaration of the Lord GOD’, establishing the speaker’s authority. The conditional im-lo {אִם־לֹ֗א | ʾim-lōʾ} ‘surely’ functions as an oath reinforcement. The locative clause bimkom hamelekh hamamlikh oto {בִּמְקוֹם הַמֶּלֶךְ הַמַּמְלִ֣יךְ אֹתוֹ | bim-qōm ham-me-lekh ham-ma-mlîkh ʾō-ṯô} ‘in the place of the king who made him king’ uses a construct chain modified by a participle. Two successive relative clauses asher bazah et-alato {אֲשֶׁר בָּזָה אֶת־אָ֣לָתוֹ | ă·šer bā-zāh ʾet-ʾā-lā-ṯô} and wa-ăšer hefer et-berito {וַאֲשֶׁר הֵפֵר אֶת־בְּרִית֑וֹ | wa-ʾă·šer hē-pêr ʾet-bə-rî-ṯô} supply the reasons, employing perfect verbs to depict covenant violations. The closing clause ito betokh Bavel yamut {אִתּ֥וֹ בְתוֹךְ־בָּבֶ֖ל יָמֽוּת | ʾit-tô bə-ṯōḵ Bā·ḇel yā-mûṯ} delivers the judgment with a Qal imperfect, underscoring inevitability in a judicial setting.
