Ezekiel 18:3ExegesisTAB

Ezekiel 18 : 3 Oath | Proverb | Prohibition
3. Linguistic Exegesis
The verse opens with the oath expression chai-ani {חַי־אָ֕נִי | ḥay-ʾānî} ‘as I live’, intensifying the divine declaration. This is followed by neum {נְאֻ֖ם | nə-ʾum} ‘utterance’, marking the prophetic introduction. The compound name Adonai Yahweh {אֲדֹנָ֣י יְהוִ֑ה | ʾă-dō-nāy Yə-hō-wāh} combines covenant intimacy with sovereign authority. The conditional im-yihyeh {אִם־יִֽהְיֶ֨ה | ʾim-yih-yeh} introduces an open condition, while meshol ha-mashal hazeh {מְשֹׁ֛ל הַמָּשָׁ֥ל הַזֶּ֖ה | mə-šōl ham-mā-šāl haz-zeh} employs repetition for emphasis. The adverb od {ע֗וֹד | ʿōḏ} precedes to stress discontinuation, and the locative be-Yisrael {בְּיִשְׂרָאֵֽל | bə-yis-rā-ʾēl} specifies the audience. English reorders these elements to present the oath, divine speech, and prohibition coherently.
