Ezekiel 20:42ExegesisTAB

Ezekiel 20 : 42 Knowledge | Covenant | Promise
42. Linguistic Exegesis
The verse begins with a vav-consecutive perfect vidatem {וִידַעְתֶּם | wî-ḏa‘-tem} ‘and you will know’ indicating resultant realization. This is followed by the conjunction ki {כִּי־ | kî} ‘that’ introducing the propositional clause with subject ani {אֲנִי | ʾă-nî} ‘I’ and the divine name Yahweh {יְהוָה | Yəhōwāh} ‘LORD’. The temporal clause is formed by the Hiphil infinitive construct bahavi’i {בַּהֲבִיאִי | ba-hă-ḇî-’î} ‘when I bring’, functioning as a subordinate clause of time, taking the direct object etkhem {אֶתְכֶם | ’et-khem} ‘you’ and the destination phrase el-admat Yisra’el {אֶל־אַדְמַת יִשְׂרָאֵל | ’el-’ăd-mat Yiśrā’ēl} ‘to the land of Israel’. The following relative clause el-ha’aretz asher {אֶל־הָאָרֶץ אֲשֶׁר | ’el-hā-’āreṣ ’ă-šer} ‘to the land which’ introduces nasati {נָשָׂאתִי | nā-śā’-tî} ‘I lifted up’ with the idiomatic object marker et-yadi {אֶת־יָדִי | ’et-yā-ḏî} ‘my hand’, expressing the oath gesture, followed by the infinitive latet {לָתֵת | lā-tet} ‘to give’ and its object otah {אוֹתָהּ | ’ō-tāh} ‘it’, concluding with laavoteikhem {לַאֲבֹתֵיכֶם | la-’ă-vō-tê-khem} ‘to your fathers’. The Hebrew construct chains and infinitives create compact temporal and relative clauses that English renders as subordinate clauses and prepositional phrases.
