Isaiah 16:3ExegesisTAB

Isaiah 16 : 3 Protection | Justice | Refuge
3. Linguistic Exegesis
The verse opens with the paired Hiphil imperatives habiu {הביאו | hə-ḇî-ʾû} ‘bring’ (plural) and havii {הָבִ֤יאִי | hā-vî-ʾî} ‘bring’ (singular), intensifying the call. This is followed by the Qal imperatives asu {עֲשׂ֣וּ | ʿă-sû} ‘execute’ and shiti {שִׁ֧יתִי | šîṯ-î} ‘set,’ framing communal and individual action. Pelilah {פְלִילָ֔ה | pə-lî-lā(h)} introduces the legal obligation of judgment. The simile kallayil {כַלַּ֛יִל | kăl-lā-ýl} ‘like the night’ paired with tsillekh {צִלֵּ֖ךְ | ṣîl-lêḵ} ‘shadow’ and the phrase betokh tsahorayim {בְּתוֹךְ צָהֳרָיִם | bə-tô-ḵ ṣā-hô-ray-yim} ‘in the midst of noonday’ employs striking contrast to emphasize covert protection at the brightest hour. The final Piel imperative satri {סַתְּרִי֙ | sat-tĕ-rî} ‘hide’ and the prohibitive altegalli {אַל־תְּגַלִּֽי | ʾal-tĕ-gal-lî} ‘do not reveal’ create an inclusio with the nouns niddachim {נִדָּחִ֔ים | nĭd-dā-ḥîm} ‘outcasts’ and noded {נֹדֵ֖ד | nō-ḏêḏ} ‘wanderer,’ underscoring the ethical imperative to protect the vulnerable.
