The people’s response begins with veamru {וְאָמְר֣וּ | wə-ʾām-rū} ‘and they shall say,’ leading into the emphatic question hayadoa lo neda {הֲיָדֹ֙עַ֙ לֹ֣א נֵדַ֔ע | ha-yā-dō-ʿa lō nə-ḏaʿ} ‘Do we not know…?’ Highlighting the obvious sets up the prophetic irony of the message.
