12. Linguistic Exegesis
The verse begins with veamarta {וְאָמַרְתָּ֨ | wə-ʾā-mar-tā} ‘and you shall say,’ commanding the prophet’s speech. The direct-object marker et {אֶת־ | ʾet} introduces hadavar hazzeh {הַדָּבָ֣ר הַזֶּ֗ה | ha-da-var ha-zzeh} ‘this word,’ specifying the divine message. The particle koh {כֹּה־ | kōh} ‘thus’ with amar {אָמַ֤ר | ʾā-mar} ‘said’ frames the speech of Yahweh {יְהוָה֙ | Yəhōwāh} and his title Elohei Yisrael {אֱלֹהֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל | ʾĕ-lō-hê yis-rā-ʾêl}, identifying Him as Israel’s God. The declaration kol nevel yimma-lê yayin {כָּל־נֵ֖בֶל יִמָּ֣לֵא יָ֑יִן | kol nê-ḇel yim-mā-lê yā-yin} functions as a nominal clause with nevel ‘jar’ as subject and the Nifal imperfect yimma-lê ‘shall be filled’ as predicate. The people’s response begins with veamru {וְאָמְר֣וּ | wə-ʾām-rū} ‘and they shall say,’ leading into the emphatic question hayadoa lo neda {הֲיָדֹ֙עַ֙ לֹ֣א נֵדַ֔ע | ha-yā-dō-ʿa lō nə-ḏaʿ} ‘Do we not know…?’ Highlighting the obvious sets up the prophetic irony of the message.
