Jeremiah 15 : 1 Intercession | Rejection | Separation
1. Linguistic Exegesis
The narrative vav in vayomer {וַיֹּאמֶר | wa-yō-mer} ‘and he said’ introduces divine speech and sets the scene for Jeremiah’s report. Yahweh {יְהוָה | Yə-hō-wāh} is the speaker, directing the address through elai {אֵלַי | ʾē-lai} ‘to me’. The hypothetical clause im-ya’amod {אִם־יַעֲמֹד | ʾim-ya-ʿă-mō-ḏ} ‘if he should stand’ frames an extreme scenario by naming Moses {מֹשֶׁה | mō-šeh} and Samuel {וּשְׁמוּאֵל | ū-šə-mū-ʾēl} as prototypical intercessors. The negative existential ein {אֵין | ʾên} ‘there is not’ plus nafshi {נַפְשִׁי | naf-šī} ‘soul’ underscores divine refusal toward el-ha’am hazzeh {אֶל־הָעָם הַזֶּה | ʾel-hā-ʿām haz-zēh} ‘this people’. The imperative shalach {שַׁלַּח | šal-laḥ} ‘send’ together with me-al-pnai {מֵעַל־פָּנַי | mē-ʿal-pā-nai} ‘from my face’ conveys both physical removal and relational separation. Finally, the cohortative veyetze’u {וְיֵצֵאוּ | wə-yē-ṣē-ʾū} ‘let them go out’ emphasizes the irrevocable nature of the judgment.
