Job 17:12ExegesisTAB

Job 17 : 12 Reversal | Darkness | Light
12. Linguistic Exegesis
The verse is built as compact Hebrew poetry with a sharp reversal. The fronted objects laylah {לַיְלָה | laylāh} ‘night’ and leyom {לְיוֹם | lə-yôm} ‘to day’ precede the verb yasimu {יָשִׂימוּ | yāśîmû} ‘they set/place’, producing emphasis: “night—into day—they put,” highlighting the claimed inversion of reality. The second segment places or {אוֹר | ʾôr} ‘light’ before its predicate karov {קָרוֹב | qārōb} ‘near’, a brief verbless clause that heightens immediacy. The prepositional complex mipnei-choshekh {מִפְּנֵי־חֹשֶׁךְ | mippənê-ḥōšeḵ} can signal either cause (“because of darkness”) or opposition/proximity (“in the face of darkness”); the rendering “in the face of” preserves the spatial/relational force of “from before” and sustains the irony of light being declared “near” precisely where darkness dominates. The implicit subject “they” is left general, fitting Job’s complaint about others’ perspective without naming them.
