The conjunction hoti {ὅτι | hóti} introduces the content clause that provides the substance of his confession: egō ouk eimi ho christos {Ἐγὼ οὐκ εἰμὶ ὁ χριστός | egō ouk eimì ho Christós} “I am not the Christ.” The explicit subject egō placed before the verb adds emphasis to the contrast between John and the true Christ who is still to be revealed. In translation, the repeated “and” along with the doubled “confessed” is preserved to reflect the solemn, almost legal tone of John’s testimony.
