In the beginning, the Word {logos: divine self-expression} already was, and the Word was with God {Theos, Eternal Source}, and the Word was God.
This One was in the beginning {arche: first moment} with God {Theos, Eternal Companion}.
All things {panta: entire created order} came into being through Him {autou: Agent of Creation}, and apart from Him not even one thing has come into being.
In Him {Logos, Eternal Life Source} was life, and the life was the light {phōs: guiding revelation} of people.
And the light shines in the darkness {skotia: realm of inner gloom}, and the darkness has not grasped it {katelaben: seized or understood}.
There came to be a man having been sent from God {Theos, Divine Sender}, whose name {onoma: designation and identity} was John.
This one came into testimony as a witness {martyrian: formal legal testimony} in order that he might bear witness concerning the light, so that all might believe through him {autou: acting as appointed herald}.
He was not that light {phos: divine illumination}, but rather that he might bear witness {martyrese: solemn testimony} about the light.
The true Light {phos: Revealing Source}, which enlightens everyone, was coming into the world {kosmos: inhabited world}.
He {Logos, Present Creator} was in the world, and the world was made through Him, and the world did not know {egno: experiential recognition} Him.
He {Iesous, Rejected Lord} came to His own domain {idia: rightful realm}, and His own people did not receive Him.
But to as many as received Him {Iesous, Giving New Birth}, to them He gave authority {exousia: delegated right} to become children {tekna: born ones} of God {Theos, Adopting Father}, to those who are believing in His name.
Who were not born from bloods {haimaton: physical lineage}, nor from the will of the flesh, nor from the will of a man, but from God {Theos, Life-Giving Source} they were born.
And the Word {Logos, Incarnate Son} became flesh, and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, glory as of the unique Son from the Father {Pater, Source of Glory}, full of grace and truth.
John {Ioannes: Prophetic Herald} bears witness about Him {Christos, Preexistent Son} and has cried out, saying, “This was He of whom I said, ‘The One coming after me has come before me, because He was before me.’”
For from His {Christos, Overflowing Source} fullness {pleroma: complete abundance} we have all received, and grace in place of grace.
For the law was given through Moses, but grace {charis: generous favor} and truth came through Jesus Christ {Iesous Christos, Grace Revealer}.
No one has ever seen God {Theos, Invisible Majesty}; the unique God, who is in the bosom of the Father {pater: relational source}, He has explained Him.
And this is the testimony {martyria: formal witness} of John, when the Jews {Ioudaioi: Judean leaders} sent priests and Levites from Jerusalem to ask him, “Who are you?”
And he confessed {homologeo: open acknowledgment} and did not deny, and he confessed, “I am not the Christ {Christos, Expected Messiah}.”
And they asked him, “What then? Are you Elijah {Elias: prophetic forerunner}?” And he says, “I am not. Are you the prophet {prophetes: expected spokesman}?” And he answered, “No.”
So they said to him {auto: John}, “Who are you, so that we may give an answer {apokrisin: official reply} to those who sent us? What do you say about yourself?”
He said, “I am the voice of one crying out in the wilderness, ‘Make straight the way of the Lord {Kyrios, Covenant Lord},’ just as Isaiah the prophet {prophetes: inspired spokesman} said.”
And those who had been sent {apestalmenoi: officially dispatched} were from the Pharisees {Pharisaios: Jewish religious sect}.
And they asked him and said to him, “Why then do you baptize, if you are not the Christ {Christos, Expected Messiah}, nor Elijah, nor the Prophet {prophetes: awaited spokesman}?”
John {Iōannēs: Prophetic Baptizer} answered them, saying, “I baptize with water {hydati: ritual washing}, but in your midst stands One {Iesous, Hidden Messiah} whom you do not know.”
The One {Iesous, Surpassing Messiah} who comes after me, of whom I am not worthy to untie the strap {himanta: lowly servant task} of His sandal.
These things took place in Bethany {Bethania: place-name across the Jordan} beyond the Jordan {Iordanou: river boundary}, where John was baptizing.
On the next day, he saw Jesus {Iesous, Sin-Bearing Messiah} coming {erchomenos: drawing near} toward him, and he said, “Behold, the Lamb of God {Amnos tou Theou, Atoning Sacrifice}, the one who takes away the sin {hamartia: moral guilt} of the world.”
This is the one concerning whom I said, “After me comes a man who has come before me, because He {Christos, Eternally Existing One} was first {protos: supreme in rank} in relation to me.”
And I myself did not know Him {Iesous, Hidden Messiah}, but in order that He might be revealed to Israel, for this reason I came baptizing in water {hydati: physical element used for ritual purification}.
And John bore witness, saying, “I have seen the Spirit {pneuma: Holy Presence} descending as a dove from heaven, and it remained upon Him {Iesous, Revealed Son}.”
And I did not know Him {Iesous, Coming Messiah}, but He who sent me to baptize with water, that One said to me, “Upon whom you see the Spirit descending and remaining upon Him, this is He who baptizes with the Holy Spirit {pneuma hagion, divine presence}.”
And I have seen and have borne witness that this is the Chosen One {eklektos: specially selected} of God {Theos, Sovereign Sender}.
On the next day again, John {Ioannes: Prophetic Herald} was standing with two of his disciples {mathetes: committed learners}.
And having looked {emblepsas: focused gaze} at Jesus {Iesous, Revealed Messiah} as He was walking, he says, “Behold, the Lamb {amnos: sacrificial substitute} of God {Theos, Providing Father}.”
And the two disciples {mathetai: committed learners} of him heard him speaking, and they followed Jesus {Iesous, Worthy Teacher}.
Jesus {Iesous, Discerning Questioner} turned, and seeing them following, said to them, “What are you seeking?” And they said to Him, “Rabbi {Rabbi: Honored Teacher}, which is translated Teacher, where are You staying?”
He {Iesous, Gracious Host} said to them, “Come and you will see.” So they came and saw where He was staying, and they remained with Him that day; it was about the tenth hour {hora: late afternoon time}.
Andrew, the brother of Simon Peter, was one of the two who heard from John {Ioannes: baptizing witness} and followed Him {Iesous, Newly Revealed Rabbi}.
He first found his own brother Simon and said to him, "We have found the Messiah {Messian: Anointed King}, which is, being translated, Christ {christos: Promised Redeemer}."
He brought him to Jesus {Iesous, Discerner of Identity}. Having looked at him, Jesus said, “You are Simon, the son of John. You will be called Cephas {Kephas: rock name}, which is interpreted Peter.”
On the next day Jesus {Iesous, Caller Of Disciples} decided to go out into Galilee, and He finds Philip, and He says to him, “Follow {akolouthei: Discipleship Call} Me.”
And Philip {Philippos: Early Disciple} was from Bethsaida, from the city {poleos: shared hometown} of Andrew {Andreou: early follower} and Peter.
Philip found Nathanael and said to him, “We have found the One of whom Moses wrote in the law {nomos: covenant instruction} and the prophets, Jesus {Iesous, Promised Fulfillment} of Nazareth, the son of Joseph.”
And Nathanael said to him, “Is anything good {agathon: truly beneficial} able to be from Nazareth {Nazaret: disregarded village}?” Philip said to him, “Come and see.”
Jesus {Iesous, Discerning Messiah} saw Nathanael {Nathanael: guileless follower} coming toward Him and says about him, “Behold, truly an Israelite in whom there is no deceit!”
Nathanael said to Him, “How do You know me?” Jesus {Iesous, Searcher of Hearts} answered and said to him, “Before Philip called you, while you were under the fig tree {syken: quiet reflection spot}, I saw you.”
Nathanael answered Him, “Rabbi {Rhabbi: honored teacher}, You are the Son of God {huios tou theou, Divine Messiah}; You are the King of Israel {basileus tou Israel: ruler over God’s people}.”
Jesus {Iesous, Heart-Knowing Teacher} answered and said to him, “Because I said to you that I saw you under the fig tree {suke: quiet hiding-place}, do you believe? You will see greater things than these.”
