Exegesis

The clause introduced by hoti {ὅτι | hóti} ‘that’ supplies the substance of the judgment: to phōs elēlythen eis ton kosmon {τὸ φῶς ἐλήλυθεν εἰς τὸν κόσμον | tó phōs elḗlythen eis tón kósmon} ‘the light has come into the world.’ The perfect form elēlythen presents the coming of the light as a completed event whose effects continue in the present, so the world remains under the force of that arrival.

In contextJohn 3:19

This, then, is the judgment : the light has arrived in the world, and humans loved the darkness in preference to the light, for their deeds were evil.
