Joshua 13:17ExegesisTAB

Joshua 13 : 17 Territory | Settlement | Geography
17. Linguistic Exegesis
The verse follows a Hebrew cataloguing pattern, opening with Heshbon and the construct phrase areiha {עָרֶ֖יהָ | ʿā-rê-hā} ‘its towns’, linking settlements to the city. The relative pronoun asher {אֲשֶׁ֣ר | ʾă-šer} introduces a restrictive clause specifying location with bamishor {בַּמִּישֹׁר | bā-mî-šôr} ‘in the plain’. The enumeration then proceeds in apposition with Dibon, uvamot {וּבָמ֣וֹת | ū-ḇā-mōṯ} ‘and Bamoth’, uveit {וּבֵ֖ית | ū-ḇêṯ} ‘and Beth’, baal {בַּ֥עַל | ba-ʿāl}, and meon {מְעֽוֹן | mə-ʿōn}. In English, compound renderings (“its-towns,” “in-the-plain”) preserve the construct and prepositional bonds, while the series of place names remains intact to reflect the original Hebrew enumeration.
