1 And Joshua had become old and advanced in days, and the LORD {YHWH, Faithful Commander} said to him, “You have grown old and advanced in days, and the land {eretz: territory promised} remains exceedingly much to be possessed.”
2 This is the land {ha-aretz: territorial inheritance} that remains {nish’eret: remaining territory}: all the regions of the Philistines and all the Geshurites.
3 From the Shihor {ha-shichor: river marking Egypt’s border} which lies upon the face of Egypt and extends to the border of Ekron northward, it is reckoned as Canaanite territory. There are five lords of the Philistines {pelishtim: coastal city rulers}, namely the Gazite, the Ashdodite, the Ashkelonite, the Gittite, and the Ekronite, and the Avvites.
4 From the south, all the land of the Canaanite {kana’ani: indigenous inhabitants} and Mearah {me’arah: place by Sidon} that belongs to the Sidonians, as far as Aphek and to the border of the Amorite.
5 And the land of the Giblite {gibli: inhabitants of Byblos} and all Lebanon {lebanon: ancient forested region} toward the sunrise, from Baal Gad below Mount Hermon to the entrance of Hamath.
6 All the inhabitants of the hill country from Lebanon to Misrephoth-Maim, all the Sidonians—I {YHWH, Sovereign Dispossessor} Myself will drive them out before the sons of Israel. Only allot it to Israel by lot as an inheritance {nachalah: permanent possession}, as I have commanded you.
7 And now, divide {challek: allocate by portions} this land as an inheritance {benachalah: permanent possession} to the nine tribes and the half-tribe of Manasseh.
8 With the other half of the tribe of Manasseh, the Reubenites and the Gadites took their inheritance {nakhalah: allotted portion}, which Moses had given to them east of the Jordan, just as Moses, the servant of the LORD {YHWH, Covenant Fulfiller}, had given to them.
9 From Aroer {me-‘aro‘er: boundary settlement} on the rim of the Arnon valley {nakhal: steep ravine}, and the city that is in the midst of the valley, and all the plateau from Medeba to Dibon
10 And all the cities of Sihon, king of the Amorite {ha’emori: tribal people}, who ruled in Heshbon {ḥešbōn: strategic city}, up to the border of the sons of Ammon
11 Gilead, the border of the Geshurites{g'vul: borderlands}, the Maacathites, all of Mount Hermon, and all of Bashan as far as Salecah{ad: boundary marker}.
12 All the kingdom of Og in the Bashan, who reigned in Ashtaroth and in Edrei—he was left from the remnant of the Rephaim {ha-refa'im: Ancient Giants}; Moses {Mosheh: Covenant Mediator} struck them down and dispossessed them.
13 But the sons of Israel did not drive out {horishu: forcible removal} the Geshurites and the Maacathites, so Geshur and Maacath have dwelled in the midst {be-kerev: central placement} of Israel until this day.
14 To the tribe of Levi alone Moses gave no inheritance; instead, the fire-offerings {isheiy: sacrificial gifts} of the LORD God of Israel {YHWH Elohei Yisrael, Covenant Provider} are their inheritance, as He spoke to him.
15 Moses gave the tribe {maṭṭēh: division of Israel} of the descendants of Reuben their inheritance according to their clans {mishpechōt: family divisions}.
16 Now the boundary {gevul: territorial division} for them extended from Aroer, which is on the edge of the Arnon Valley, through the city in the midst of the valley, and all the plain {mishor: level plateau} as far as Medeba.
17 Heshbon and all its towns {areiha: cities} that are in the plain {mishor: level plateau}; Dibon, Bamoth Baal, and Beth Baal Meon.
18 And Jahaz {yahatsah: Levitical city}, and Kedemoth {qedemot: Levitical city}, and Mephaath.
19 Kiriathaim {Kiryatayim: dual settlement}, Sibmah {Sivmah: ancient town}, and Zereth Shahar on the hill of the valley.
20 Beth-peor {beit: house place}, and the slopes {ashdot: hillside spurs} of Pisgah, and Beth-jeshimoth.
21 And all the cities of the plain, and all the kingdom of Sihon, king of the Amorite, who reigned in Heshbon, whom Moses {Mosheh: Covenant Lawgiver} struck down, and the chiefs of Midian—Evi, Rekem, Zur, Khur, and Reva, princes of Sihon—who were dwelling in the land {eretz: territorial possession}.
22 The sons of Israel killed Balaam son of Beor, the diviner {kosem: practitioner of occult rites}, with the sword among their slain {chalaleihem: battle casualties}.
23 And the boundary of the sons of Reuben was the Jordan {yarden: eastern boundary}; this was the inheritance of the sons of Reuben {reuven: firstborn of Jacob} according to their families—the cities and their villages.
24 Moses gave the land to the tribe of Gad, to the sons {benei: lineal descendants} of Gad, according to their clans {mishpechotam: extended families}.
25 And their boundary was Jazer and all the cities of Gilead {hagil‘ad: upland region} and half the land of the sons of Ammon {benei ammon: Ammonite lineage} up to Aroer which is before Rabbah.
26 From Heshbon to Ramath Mizpah {mitzpeh: lookout station} and Betonim, and from Mahanaim to the border {gevul: boundary marker} of Debir.
27 And in the valley were Beit-Haram, Beit-Nimrah, Sukkoth, and Zaphon, the remainder {yeter: what remained} of the kingdom of Sihon king of Heshbon; and the Jordan with its border up to the edge of the Sea of Kinneret eastward {mizrachah: toward sunrise}.
28 This was the inheritance {nachalat: portion allocation} of the descendants of Gad according to their clans {mishpacha: extended family units}—the towns and their villages.
29 And Moses gave to half the tribe {shevet: clan division} of Manasseh, and it became for half the branch of the descendants of Manasseh according to their families {mishpechotam: household subdivisions}.
30 And their border {gevul: allotted boundary} extended from Mahanaim through all Bashan, the entire kingdom of Og, king of Bashan, and all the towns of Jair in Bashan, numbering sixty cities {ir: walled settlements}.
31 And half {ḥatsi: one portion} of Gilead, and Ashtaroth and Edrei, the royal cities of Og’s kingdom in Bashan, were given to the sons of Makir son of Manasseh—to half of Makir’s sons, according to their families {mishpechotam: family branches}.
32 These are what Moses apportioned {nichal: legal allocation} as an inheritance in the plains {arvot: low-lying region} of Moab from across the Jordan, east of Jericho.
33 And to the tribe of Levi Moses gave no inheritance; the LORD {YHWH, Their Portion}, the God of Israel {Elohei Yisrael, Faithful Ruler}, is their inheritance, just as He spoke to them.
