| 1. Formal Translation Now the lot fell to the tribe of Manasseh because he was the firstborn of Joseph; and to Makir, the firstborn of Manasseh and father of Gilead—because he was a man of war—Gilead and Bashan were allotted. |
| 1. Dynamic Translation This was the territory assigned to the tribe of Manasseh, Joseph’s firstborn. Makir, Manasseh’s firstborn and father of the Gileadites, received Gilead and Bashan because he was a warrior. |
