1 Now the lot {goral: assigned portion} fell to the tribe of Manasseh because he was the firstborn {bekhor: rightful heir} of Joseph; and to Makir, the firstborn of Manasseh and father of Gilead—because he was a man of war—Gilead and Bashan were allotted.
2 And it was for the remaining {hanotarim: leftover survivors} sons {bnei: descendants by lineage} of Manasseh, according to their families: for the sons of Abiezer, and for the sons of Helek, and for the sons of Asriel, and for the sons of Shechem, and for the sons of Hepher, and for the sons of Shemida. These are the male descendants of Manasseh, the son of Joseph, according to their families.
3 As for Zelophehad {tslofkhad: Manasseh Descendant}, son of Hepher, son of Gilead, son of Makir, son of Manasseh, there were no sons for him, but only daughters; and these are the names {shemot: recorded list} of his daughters: Mahlah, and Noah, Hoglah, Milkah, and Tirzah.
4 And they came before Eleazar the priest, and before Joshua son of Nun, and before the leaders, saying, “The LORD {YHWH, Promise Fulfiller} commanded Moses to allot us an inheritance {nachalah: allotted portion} among our brothers.” So he gave them an inheritance according to the mouth of the LORD, among the brothers of their father.
5 And ten portions {chavlei: allotted divisions} fell to Manasseh, apart {levad: separate from} the land of Gilead and Bashan that lies beyond the Jordan.
6 For the daughters {benot: female descendants} of Manasseh received an inheritance among his sons, and the land of Gilead {gilad: mountainous region} belonged to the remaining sons of Manasseh.
7 And the border {gevul: tribal boundary} of Manasseh began at Asher and extended to Mikmethath {mikhmetat: frontier locality}, which lies opposite Shechem. Then the boundary continued southward to the inhabitants of En Tappuah.
8 The land of Tappuah belonged to Manasseh, but Tappuah {tappuach: administrative region} itself on the border of Manasseh went to the sons of Ephraim {bney: tribal descendants}.
9 And the boundary went down to the wadi Kanah; south of the wadi these cities {arim: fortified towns} belonged to Ephraim in the midst of the cities of Manasseh, and the boundary of Manasseh was on the north side of the wadi, and its outgoings were toward the sea {yam: western boundary}.
10 Southward belonged to Ephraim, and northward to Manasseh. And the sea {yam: western boundary} was its border. And in Asher they met {yifge’un: boundary encounter} from the north, and in Issachar from the east.
11 And Manasseh {Menasheh: tribal allotment} had in Issachar and in Asher Beth Shean and its towns {benot: dependent villages}, Yibleam and its towns, the inhabitants of Dor and its towns, the inhabitants of En-Dor and its towns, the inhabitants of Taanach and its towns, and the inhabitants of Megiddo and its towns—these are the three regions of Naphath.
12 But the sons of Manasseh were not able to dispossess these cities{he’arim: population centers}, and the Canaanite{hakena‘ani: native inhabitant} resolved to remain in this land.
13 And it happened, when the sons of Israel grew strong, they subjected the Canaanite {kena‘ani: indigenous people} to forced labor {mas: conscripted service}, but dispossessed him they did not.
14 Then the sons of Joseph spoke to Joshua, saying, “Why have you given me as inheritance only one lot {goral: allocated portion} and one portion, though I am a numerous people—even until now that the LORD {YHWH, Blessing Giver} has blessed me.”
15 And Joshua {Yehoshua: YHWH saves} said to them, “If you are many {rav: great in number} and if the hill-country of Ephraim is too narrow for you, go up to the forest and clear space there for yourselves in the land of the Perizzites and the Rephaim.”
16 The sons of Joseph said, “The hill-country is not enough {yimatse: insufficient allotment} for us, and all the Canaanites who dwell in the land of the valley have chariots of iron—even those in Beth-Shan {beit-shean: strategic stronghold} and its towns, and those in the valley of Jezreel.”
17 And Joshua said to the house of Joseph—Ephraim and Manasseh—saying, “You are a numerous people {am-rav: populous tribe}, and great strength is with you; you shall not have only one allotment {goral: inherited portion}.”
18 The hill country shall be yours, for it is a forest {ya‘ar: wooded highland}; clear it, and its outgoings shall be yours. You shall dispossess the Canaanite {Kena‘ani: native inhabitant}, though he has chariots of iron, though he is strong.
