Joshua 19:3ExegesisTAB

Joshua 19 : 3 Settlement | Allotment | Topography
3. Linguistic Exegesis
The verse is an asyndetic list of place names connected by the conjunction vav {וַ/וּ/וָ | wa/wə} ‘and’. The initial vav-consecutive in va-chatzar {וַחֲצַר | va-ḥa-ṣar} ‘and settlement’ ties back to the preceding allotment sequence. The construct phrase chatzar–shual {חֲצַר־שׁוּעָל | ḥaẓar-šû‘āl} ‘settlement of Shual’ designates the first locale. The items u-bala {וּבָלָה | ū·bālā} ‘and Balah’ and va-atzem {וָעָצֶם | vā·‘āṣem} ‘and Azem’ maintain the paratactic enumeration. Rendering each conjunction in English preserves the Hebrew rhythmic cadence and equal emphasis on all sites.
