Judges 13:3ExegesisTAB

Judges 13 : 3 Announcement | Promise | Expectation
3. Linguistic Exegesis
The verse opens with the vav-consecutive verb vayeira {וַיֵּרָ֥א | wayyērāʾ} ‘and he appeared’, signalling divine initiative. The construct noun malakh-Yahweh {מַלְאַךְ־יְהוָ֖ה | malʾākh–Yəhōwāh} ‘angel of the LORD’ indicates authoritative messenger. The prepositional phrase el-ha-ishah {אֶל־הָאִשָּׁ֑ה | ʾēl–hāʾiššāh} ‘to the woman’ identifies the recipient. Dialogue begins with the particle hinneh-na {הִנֵּה־נָ֤א | hinnēʾ nāʾ} ‘look now’, creating immediacy. The fused pronoun-noun at-akarah {אַתְּ־עֲקָרָה֙ | ʾattə–ʿăqārāh} ‘you are barren’ conveys her status. The conjunction velo {וְלֹ֣א | wə-lōʾ} ‘and not’ negates the perfect verb yaladt {יָלַ֔דְתְּ | yālaḏt} ‘you have borne’, emphasising absence. This is paralleled by the promises ve-harit {וְהָרִ֖ית | wə-hāriṯ} ‘and you will conceive’ and ve-yaladt {וְיָלַ֥דְתְּ | wə-yālaḏt} ‘and you will bear’, where imperfect versus perfect forms express future certainty. The final noun ben {בֵּֽן | bēn} ‘son’ serves as the climactic focus.
