Judges 18:3ExegesisTAB

Judges 18 : 3 Recognition | Inquiry | Presence
3. Linguistic Exegesis
The narrative begins with the independent pronoun hemah {הֵמָּה | hēmmāh} ‘they’ paired with the prepositional phrase im-bêyt {עִם־בֵּית | ʿim-bêyt} ‘with the house of,’ establishing the spies’ location near Micah’s dwelling. The conjunction and pronoun wə-hēmmāh {וְהֵמָּה | wə-hēmmāh} ‘and they’ shifts to hikkîrû {הִכִּירוּ | hikkîrû} ‘recognized,’ which takes ’et-qôl {אֶת־קוֹל | ’et-qôl} ‘the voice’ as its direct object and identifies han-nāʿar ha-lewî {הַנַּעַר הַלֵּוִי | han-nāʿar ha-lewî} ‘the young Levite’ as the speaker. The vav-consecutive wayyāsûrû {וַיָּס֣וּרוּ | wayyāsûrû} ‘and they turned aside’ leads into wayyō’merû {וַיֹּאמְרוּ | wayyō’merû} ‘and they said,’ introducing a threefold interrogation via mî-hĕvî’ăkâ {מִֽי־הֱבִיאֲךָ | mî-hĕvî’ăkâ} ‘who has brought you,’ û-mâh-’attâh {וּמָה־אַתָּה | û-mâh-’attâh} ‘and what you are doing,’ and û-mâh-ləḵâ {וּמַה־לְּךָ | û-mâh-ləḵâ} ‘and what is to you.’ The final adverb pô {פֹּה | pô} ‘here’ grounds the inquiry in a specific location. This sequence from identification to pointed questioning heightens dramatic tension and underscores the Levite’s unexpected presence.
