Exegesis

The relative pronoun hos {ὃς | hòs} introduces a clause that further characterizes this hypothetical master: hos eiselthonti ek tou agrou eipē autō {ὃς εἰσελθόντι ἐκ τοῦ ἀγροῦ εἴπῃ αὐτῷ | hòs ei-sel-thón-ti ek tou a-grou eíp-ē au-tō̂}. Here, the dative participle eiselthonti ‘when he has come in’ functions temporally in relation to the finite verb eipē, and is linked semantically with autō ‘to him,’ depicting the moment when the servant returns from the field. The aorist subjunctive eipē in a rhetorical question presents a potential action as unlikely: “would he say…?”
