Exegesis

The next clause ephobounto gar auton {ἐφοβοῦντο γὰρ αὐτὸν | e-pho-boûn-to gár au-tón} explains their motive with the imperfect middle/passive ‘were fearing’, and the subsequent rationale pas gar ho ochlos exeplēsseto {πᾶς γὰρ ὁ ὄχλος ἐξεπλήσσετο | pâs gár ho ókh-los ex-e-plḗs-se-to} ‘for the whole crowd was astonished’ at Jesus’ didachē {διδαχῇ | di-da-khḗ}, with epi {ἐπί | e-pí} plus the dative autou {αὐτοῦ | au-toû} specifying the object of amazement. The double use of gar is retained in “for” and “since” to preserve the causal emphasis of the Greek.

In contextMark 11:18
