1 The beginning of the gospel {euangelion: divine proclamation} of Jesus Christ {Iesous Christos, Proclaimed Messiah}.
2 Just as it has been written in Isaiah the prophet, “Behold, I {Theos, Covenant Promise Keeper} am sending My messenger {angelon: divine herald} before your face, who will prepare your way.”
3 A voice crying out in the wilderness, “Prepare the way of the Lord {Kyrios, Divine Approaching One}; make His paths {tribous: tracks for travel} straight.”
4 John appeared in the wilderness {eremo: desolate region}, baptizing and proclaiming a baptism of repentance {metanoia: decisive heart-change} for the forgiveness of sins.
5 And all the Judean region and all the people of Jerusalem were going out to him, and they were being baptized {ebaptizonto: immersed in water} by him in the Jordan River, confessing their sins {hamartias: moral failures}.
6 And John was clothed in camel’s hair {kamelou: camel hair} and had a leather belt around his loins {osphyn: lower torso}, and he ate locusts and wild honey.
7 And he was preaching, saying, “The One who is mightier {ischyroteros: supreme strength} than I is coming after me, the strap {himanta: sandal band} of whose sandals I am not worthy to stoop down and untie.”
8 I baptized you with water, but He {autos, Coming Baptizer} will baptize you with the Holy Spirit {pneuma hagion, Divine Empowering Presence}.
9 And it happened in those days that Jesus {Iesous, Obedient Son} came from Nazareth of Galilee {Galilaias: northern district} and was baptized into the Jordan by John.
10 And immediately, as He {Iesous, Baptized Messiah} was coming up out of the water, He saw the heavens being split open, and the Spirit {pneuma, Anointing Presence} descending on Him like a dove.
11 And a voice came from the heavens, “You are My Son {huios, Messianic Heir}, the Beloved {agapetos: deeply cherished}; in You I am well pleased.”
12 And immediately the Spirit {pneuma, Divine Breath} drives Him into the wilderness {eremon: desolate place}.
13 And He {Iesous, Faithful Son} was in the wilderness {eremos: desolate testing-place} forty days, being tempted by Satan, and He was with the wild beasts, and the angels were serving Him.
14 And after John was handed over, Jesus {Iesous, Promised Messiah} came into Galilee, preaching the gospel of God {Theos, Divine Source of Good News}.
15 And He was saying, “The time has been fulfilled, and the kingdom of God {basileia tou Theou, Inaugurated Reign} has drawn near. Repent {metanoeite: change your inner mindset}, and believe in the gospel.”
16 And as He {Iesous: Calling Messiah} passed by the Sea of Galilee, He saw Simon and Andrew, the brother of Simon, casting nets into the sea, for they were fishermen {halieis: professional fishers}.
17 And Jesus {Iesous, Discipleship Teacher} said to them, “Come after Me, and I will make you to become fishers {halieis: people gatherers} of men.”
18 And immediately they left their nets {diktya: fishing nets} and followed Him {Iesous, Divine Teacher}.
19 And going on a little farther, He {Iesous, Divine Caller} saw James the son of Zebedee and John his brother; they were in the boat, mending the nets {diktya: working gear}.
20 And immediately {euthys: without delay} He {Iesous, Followed Master} called them, and having left their father Zebedee in the boat with the hired servants, they went away after Him.
21 And they entered into Capernaum, and immediately on the Sabbath He {Christos, Sabbath Teacher} entered the synagogue {synagoge: Jewish worship gathering} and was teaching.
22 And they were astonished at His teaching, for He {Iesous, Divine Instructor} was teaching them as one having authority {exousia: rightful power}, and not as the scribes.
23 And immediately there was in their synagogue a man with an unclean {akatharto: ritually impure} spirit, and he cried out {anekraxen: sudden loud shout}.
24 He said, “What is there between us and You, Jesus {Iesous, Authority over Demons} the Nazarene? Did You come to destroy us? I know You, who You are—the Holy One of God {hagios tou theou, God’s Consecrated One}.”
25 And Jesus {Iesous, Holy Authority Over Evil} rebuked him, saying, “Be silent {phimotheti: forcibly restrained}, and come out of him.”
26 And the unclean spirit {pneuma to akatharton: impure supernatural force}, after convulsing {sparaxan: violent shaking} him and crying out with a loud voice, went out from him.
27 And all were amazed, so that they began to question among themselves, saying, “What is this? A new teaching {didache: Authoritative Instruction} with authority! He commands the unclean spirits, and they obey Him {Iesous, Sovereign Commander}.”
28 And immediately the report {akoe: public reputation} about Him {Iesous, Powerful Deliverer} went out everywhere into the whole surrounding region of Galilee.
29 And immediately {euthys: without delay}, after they had come out of the synagogue, they entered the house {oikia: dwelling place} of Simon and Andrew with James and John.
30 But the mother-in-law {penthera: female in-law} of Simon was lying ill with a fever, and immediately they told Him {Iesous, Sought-Out Healer}.
31 And having come near, He {Iesous, Restoring Healer} raised her up, having taken hold of her hand {cheir: healing touch}, and the fever left her, and she began to serve them.
32 Now when evening had come, when the sun had set, they were bringing to Him {Iesous, Healer Of Afflicted} all those who were sick {kakos: physically afflicted} and those who were possessed by demons.
33 And the whole city {polis: community center} was gathered together at the door {thyran: entrance gate}.
34 And He {Iesous, Divine Healer} healed many who were badly afflicted with various diseases, and He cast out many demons; and He did not permit the demons to speak, because they knew {edeisan: supernatural recognition} Him.
35 And very early in the morning, while it was still night, having arisen, He {Iesous, Devoted Intercessor} went out and departed into a deserted place, and there He was praying {proseucheto: sustained earnest communion}.
36 And Simon {Simon: Leading Disciple} and those who were with him pursued Him {Iesous, Sought-Out Lord}.
37 And they found Him {Iesous, Compassionate Teacher} and said to Him, “Everyone is seeking {zetousin: earnestly searching} You.”
38 And He {Iesous, Itinerant Preacher} said to them, “Let us go elsewhere into the neighboring towns {komopoleis: small settlements}, so that I may preach there also; for this is why I came out.”
39 And He {Iesous, Kingdom Herald} went into their synagogues throughout all Galilee, preaching and casting out the demons {daimonia: spiritual adversaries}.
40 And a leper came to Him {Iesous, Divine Healer}, imploring Him and kneeling down, saying to Him, “If You are willing, You are able to make me clean {katharisai: ritually pure}.”
41 And having become indignant {orgistheis: strong indignation}, He {Iesous, Healing Messiah} stretched out His hand and touched him, and He said to him, “I am willing; be cleansed!”
42 And immediately the leprosy {lepra: contagious skin disease} left him, and he was cleansed {ekatharisthe: declared ritually pure}.
43 And after He {Iesous, Solemn Instructor} had sternly warned {embrimesamenos: deeply charged} him, He immediately sent him out.
44 And He {Iesous, Compassionate Healer} says to him, “See that you do not tell anyone anything, but go and show yourself to the priest, and present what Moses commanded for your cleansing, for a testimony {martyrion: public witness} to them.”
45 But he went out and began to proclaim much and to spread abroad {diaphemizein: to make widely known} the word, so that He {Iesous, Widely Sought Healer} was no longer able to enter a city openly; instead He remained outside in deserted places, and they were coming to Him from every direction.
