The imperfect elegon {ἔλεγον | é-le-gon} ‘they were saying’ introduces ongoing, repeated reports and, with hoti {ὅτι | hó-ti}, marks the start of indirect discourse: Iōannēs ho baptizōn egēgertai ek nekrōn {Ἰωάννης ὁ βαπτίζων ἐγήγερται ἐκ νεκρῶν | I-ō-Án-nēs ho bap-TÍ-zōn e-Gḗ-ger-tai ek ne-krôn}, where the perfect passive egēgertai ‘has been raised’ presents John’s supposed resurrection as a completed event whose effects continue.
