He says he is ready to baptize Jesus instead.

He recognizes that he is the one who needs help from Jesus.

He sees Jesus as needing his guidance first.

He thinks both of them are equally in need here.

He wants to keep control by refusing the moment.

Admit your need and receive what Jesus gives.

Wait until you can prove yourself before coming near Jesus.

Keep directing the situation so you remain in control.

Assume your own role is enough and no help is needed.

If you would like to receive Jesus, pray this with me: Lord Jesus, I admit that I have sinned and that I need your cleansing. I cannot make myself right with God or save myself. I believe you died for my sins and rose again. I turn from my sin and receive you as my Lord and Savior. Come into my life, wash me, and lead me from this day on. Amen.

Need for Your Cleansing

Lord, revive your Church so we stop resisting your coming and learn to yield to you. Where we have been proud, self-sufficient, or slow to listen, bring us low in holy humility. Teach us to welcome your cleansing and to make room for your rule among us, in the name of Jesus. Amen.

Make Your Church Humble

We thank you, Lord, that you do not wait for us to be strong before you draw near. Thank you that you meet needy people with mercy, and that you are greater than our weakness. Help us receive your help with gratitude, in the name of Jesus. Amen.

Thank You for Coming to the Needy

Lord, forgive me for the times I try to control what you are doing instead of trusting your way. Give me a humble heart like John's, quick to admit my need and quick to yield to you. Wash me and lead me where I need to go, in the name of Jesus. Amen.

When I Resist You

Name one situation where you have been pushing against Jesus' direction. Tell him what you are afraid of, ask him to show you what you need, and invite him to lead you into obedience.

Pray About One Place of Resistance

Pray for a person who feels too small, too late, or too unready to come near Jesus. Ask God to soften their heart, remove their shame, and help them receive the help he offers, in the name of Jesus. Amen.

For Someone Who Feels Unworthy
