1 A written record detailing the lineage of Jesus Christ {Iesous Christos, Royal Anointed Savior}, son of David {Dauid: promised royal heir} and of Abraham.
2 Abraham {Abraam: covenant ancestor} became the father of Isaac, Isaac was the father of Jacob, and Jacob was the father of Judah and his brothers {adelphous: male siblings}.
3 Judah {Ioudas: royal tribe forefather} begat Perez and Zerah by Tamar {Thamar: lineage matriarch}, and Perez begat Hezron, and Hezron begat Aram.
4 Aram fathered {egennesen: became ancestor} Amminadab, and Amminadab fathered Nahshon, and Nahshon fathered Salmon {Salmon: key ancestor}.
5 And Salmon fathered Boaz by Rahab {Rhachab: Gentile mother}, and Boaz fathered Obed {Iobed: ancestor of David} by Ruth, and Obed fathered Jesse.
6 And Jesse {Iessai: father of David} begat David the king; and David the king begat Solomon {Solomona: royal ancestor} by the woman who had been Uriah’s wife.
7 And Solomon {Solomōn: royal ancestor} begat Rehoboam, and Rehoboam begat Abijah, and Abijah begat Asaph {Asaph: disputed ancestor}.
8 Asaph begot {egennesen: became ancestor} Jehoshaphat {Iosaphat: named descendant}, and Jehoshaphat begot Joram, and Joram begot Uzziah.
9 Uzziah {Ozias: royal ancestor} begat Jotham, and Jotham begat Ahaz, and Ahaz begat Hezekiah {Ezekian: faithful reformer}.
10 Hezekiah {Hezekias: royal ancestor} became the father of Manasseh, and Manasseh became the father of Amos, and Amos became the father of Josiah {Iosias: Davidic reformer}.
11 And Josiah {Iosias: Davidic ruler} begat Jeconiah and his brothers at the time of the deportation {metoikesia: forced relocation} to Babylon.
12 After the deportation {metoikesia: forced removal} to Babylon, Jeconiah {Iekhonias: exiled Davidic king} fathered Shealtiel, and Shealtiel fathered Zerubbabel.
13 Zerubbabel {Zorobabel: post-exile leader} fathered Abiud, Abiud fathered Eliakim {Eliakim: later royal heir}, and Eliakim fathered Azor.
14 Azor {Azor: ancestral forebear} begat {egennesen: fathered descendants} Sadok, and Sadok begat Achim, and Achim begat Eliud.
15 Eliud begat {egennesen: direct male descent} Eleazar, and Eleazar begat Matthan, and Matthan begat Jacob {Iakob: pivotal ancestor figure}.
16 And Jacob begat Joseph, the husband of Mary, from whom Jesus {Iesous, Promised Savior} was born, who is called Christ {Christos, Anointed King}.
17 Thus the generations are presented in three spans of fourteen: from Abraham to David; from David to the Babylonian exile {metoikesia: forced removal}; and from the Babylonian exile to Christ {Christos, Messianic Fulfillment}.
18 Now the birth of Jesus Christ {Iesous Christos, Promised Messiah} came about in this way: after His mother Mary had been betrothed to Joseph, before they came together, she was found to be pregnant from the Holy Spirit {pneuma hagion, Divine Agent}.
19 But Joseph, her husband, being a just man {dikaios: law-abiding} and not wanting to subject her to public disgrace {deigmatizo: public exposure}, resolved to send her away secretly.
20 Yet while he was weighing these matters, look, an angel of the Lord {Kyrios, Sovereign Lord} appeared to him in a dream and said, “Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary as your wife, for what has been conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit {pneuma hagion, Spirit of Conception}.”
21 She will bear a son, and you shall call His name Jesus {Iesous, Promised Savior}, for He Himself will save His people from their sins {hamartion: moral guilt}.
22 Now all this happened so that the message {rhēthen: Previously Spoken} by the Lord {Kyrios, Sovereign Lord} through the prophet might be fulfilled:
23 Look, the virgin {parthenos: unmarried maiden} will be with child and will bear a son, and they will name Him Immanuel, which means God {Theos, Covenant Presence} is with us.
24 When Joseph rose {egertheis: prompt rising} from sleep, he carried out the command of the angel of the Lord {angelos kyriou, Guiding Sovereign} and took his wife.
25 And he did not know {eginōsken: Intimate Union} her until she had borne a son, and he gave Him the name Jesus {Iesous, Promised Savior}.
