They place themselves alongside the Pharisees as frequent fasters.

They say Jesus' followers are not fasting.

They speak directly to Jesus with a question.

They ask about prayer instead of fasting.

They mention the temple as the place where this happens.

Ask a humble question and seek understanding before judging.

Assume your way is the only faithful way.

Compare yourself until you can prove your practice is stronger.

If you would like to receive Jesus, pray this with me: Lord Jesus, I admit that I have sinned and trusted my own way more than yours. I need your mercy and your forgiveness. I believe you died for my sins and rose again. I turn from my sin and trust you as my Lord and Savior. Teach me to come to you with honesty and a humble heart. Amen.

Come to Jesus with an Honest Heart

Lord, revive your Church so we seek you more than we seek to be seen or compared. Where we have turned devotion into rivalry, forgive us. Give us humility, honest questions, and a fresh hunger for you, so we come to Jesus with open hearts and listen to one another with grace, in the name of Jesus. Amen.

Bring to God thanks for: a Savior who receives honest questions; believers who are willing to speak directly; the grace to compare less and listen more.

Pray by naming one place where you have been tempted to measure your faith against someone else's, then ask Jesus for humility, clarity, and a respectful conversation.

Pray for: Christians who fast or practice disciplines in different ways; unity that does not depend on sameness; grace to assume sincerity before suspicion.

For Different Practices, One Lord

Father, forgive me for judging devotion by appearances or by my own habits. Cleanse me from pride and comparison. Help me honor sincere believers, ask better questions, and follow Jesus with a humble heart, in the name of Jesus. Amen.
