25. Linguistic Exegesis
The verse opens with the narrative marker vay·dabbēr {וַיְדַבֵּר | way·ḏabbēr} ‘and he spoke’, where the vav-consecutive signifies sequential action. The prepositional phrase ʼel-mō·šē {אֶל־מֹשֶׁה | ʾel-mō·šē} ‘to Moses’ identifies the recipient of the divine utterance. The infinitive construct lē·mōr {לֵּאמֹר | lē·mōר} ‘saying’ functions as a quotation introducer, creating a syntactic boundary before the ensuing command. In formal reconstruction the Hebrew verb–object order is largely preserved for structural fidelity, whereas dynamic rendering shifts to a more standard English subject–verb sequence for readability. The placement of lē·mōר at the clause end imparts anticipation, which both versions maintain through the concluding comma.
